HYMN 153. L. M.

Or Him, who did salvation bring,
I could for ever think, and sing!
Cheer up, ye guilty, he'll forgive;
Approach, ye poor, he will relieve!
Ask but his grace, and lo! 'tis giv'n!
Ask, and he turns your hell to heav'n!
Tho' sin and sorrow wound my soul,
The balm of Christ can make it whole.
Guide thou my course,-my heart approve,
And draw me with the cords of love:
Still make me walk;-still make me tend
By thee, my way, to God my end.

HYMN 154. S. M.

THE God of Abraham praise
Who reigns enthroned above;
Ancient of everlasting days,
And God of endless love!
Jehovah, Great I AM!

By earth and heav'n confessed;
I bow, and bless thy sacred name,
The name for ever blest!

The God of Abraham praise,

At whose supreme command

From earth I rise, and seek the joys
On high, at his right hand.
I'll all on earth forsake,

Its wisdom, fame, and power;
And him my only portion make,
My Shield, my Rock, my Tower

[blocks in formation]

THE God of Abraham praise,
Whose all-sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my happy days,
Secure in all his ways.

He calls a worm his friend!
He calls Himself my God!
And He shall save me to the end,
Thro' Jesus' sacred blood!

He by Himself hath sworn,
I on his oath depend,-
I shall, on eagle's wings upborne,
To heavenly realms ascend.

I shall behold his face :
I shall his power adore,
And sing the wonders of his grace,
In heav'n for evermore.

HYMN 155. C. M.

THE Christian would not have his lot Be other than it is,

For, while his Father rules the world, He knows that world is his.

He knows, that He, who gave the best,
Will give him all beside;

Assured, each seeming good he asks
Is evil, if denied.

When clouds of sorrow gather round,
His bosom owns no fear;

He knows whate'er his portion be,
His God will still be near.

N

And when the threatened storm has burst,

Hard tho' the trial be,

Something yet whispers him within, "Be still, for it is He."

*HYMN 156. L. M.

SONS of bondage, come and see
How, when pardoned, we are free:
Grace is freedom; Christ our head
Makes us free among the dead.
O the toils of Satan's ways,
Fearful nights, perplexing days!
O, the slippery paths we trod,
While in enmity with God!

Can cursing lips breathe holy prayers?
Can evil eyes shed holy tears?

Can ears of earth love sounds of heav'n,
Or peace to rebel hearts be giv'n?
No, Christ will never peace impart,
But where his love is in the heart:
In him alone we live and move,
For love is peace, and Christ is love.

HYMN 157. L. M.

AUTHOR of faith, eternal Word,
Whose Spirit breathes the vital flame,
Faith, like its Finisher and Lord,
To-day, as yesterday, the same:
To thee our humble hearts aspire,
In us the works of faith fulfil:
Increase in us the kindled fire;

Give us the gift unspeakable.

To him, that in thy name believes,
Eternal life with thee is giv'n :
Into himself he all receives,

Pardon, and holiness, and heav'n.
Faith lends its realizing light,

The clouds disperse, the shadows fly; Th' Invisible appears in sight,

And God is seen by mortal eye.

HYMN 158. P. M.

GUIDE us, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrims thro' this barren land,
We are weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold us with thy powerful hand :
Bread of Heav'n,

Feed us till we want no more.
Open, Lord, the chrystal fountain,
Whence the healing waters flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar

Lead us all our journey through:
Strong Deliverer,

Be thou still our strength and shield.
When we reach the parting river,
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Thou, who art the grave's destruction,
Land us safe on Canaan's side:

Songs of praises,
We will ever give to thee.

HYMN 159. L. M.

THERE's not a bird, in lonely nest
On pathless wood, or mountain crest,
Nor living thing, that does not share,
O God, in thy paternal care.

In busy mart, or crowded street,
No less than in the still retreat,
Thou, Lord, art near, our souls to bless,
With all a parent's tenderness.

Each barren crag, each desert rude,
Holds thee within its solitude;
And thou dost cheer the wanderer there,
Who makes his solitary prayer.

Then we, where'er our lot is cast,
While life, and thought, and feeling last,
Thro' all our years, in every place,
Will bless thee for thy boundless grace.

HYMN 160. L. M.

Oн, where is now that glowing love,
That mark'd communion with the Lord?
Our hearts were fixed on things above,
Nor could the world such joy afford.
Where are the happy seasons spent
In fellowship with him we loved?
The sacred joy, the sweet content,
The blessedness, that once we proved?
Behold, again we turn to thee,

O cast us, cast us not away!

No peace we have, no joy we see,
But in the Life, the Truth, the Way.

HYMN 161. L. M.

ETERNAL Power, whose high abode
Is as the majesty of God,

Infinite lengths beyond the bounds
Where stars revolve their little rounds!
