"Poor and afflicted,"-'tis their lot;
They know it, and they murmur not :
'Twould ill become them to refuse

The path their Master deign'd to choose.
"Poor and afflicted," but ere long
They'll join the bright celestial throng;
Their suff'rings then will reach a close,
And heav'n afford them sweet repose.
And while they walk their thorny way,
They're often heard to sigh and say,
"Come, gracious Lord, O quickly come,
And take thy mourning pilgrims home.”

HYMN 224. S. M.

CHILDREN of God have found
Glory begun below:

Celestial fruit on earthly ground
From faith and hope may grow.
The hill of Zion yields

A thousand sacred sweets,
Before we reach God's heavenly fields,
Or walk the golden streets.

There shall we see his face,

And never, never sin;

There, from the rivers of his grace,
Drink endless pleasures in!

Then let our songs abound,

And every tear be dry;

We're marching thro' Immanuel's ground

To fairer worlds on high.

HYMN 225. L. M.

WE sing the praise of him, who died,
Of him who died upon the cross;
The sinner's hope let men deride,

For Christ we count the world but loss. Inscribed upon the cross we see, In shining letters, "God is love;" He bears our sins upon the tree, He brings us mercy from above. This makes the sinking spirits brave, And nerves the feeble arm for fight; It takes its terror from the grave, And gilds the bed of death with light.

HYMN 226. C. M.

SOON will the toilsome strife be o'er,
Of sorrow and of care,
And life's dull vanities no more
This anxious breast ensnare.

Cheer up, my soul: on God rely,
Deliv'rance soon shall come;

A thousand ways Jehovah has
To bring believers home.

Since first I drew this vital breath,
He kindly led me on ;
Taught me to rest my weary head

On Christ the corner stone.

So comforted, and so sustained,
With dark events I strove,

And found them, as I walked by faith,
All messengers of love.

HYMN 227. L. M.

In all the varying scenes of woe,
The lot of fallen man below,

Still lift thy tearful eye above,
And hope in God, for "God is love."
Sweet is the thought; time flies apace,
This earth is not our resting place;
And sweet the promise of the Lord,
To all, who love his name and word.
Then, weeping pilgrim, dry thy tears;
Comfort on every side appears;
An eye beholds thee from above,
The eye of God, and “ God is love."
HYMN 228. L. M.

WHEN on the desert waste and cold,
My Shepherd stood beside me there :
Oft have I wandered from his fold,

But ne'er could wander from his care. Come, thou good Shepherd, gently lead Where streams of living waters flow; And shelter me beneath the shade

Which all thy humble followers know. There would I feed, and there recline, And there would listen to thy voice; Thy pastures and thy fold be mine, And thou, the Shepherd of my choice.

HYMN 229. c. M.

JESUS, I haste from earth away,
And with thy church unite;
Thy saints shall be my company,
Thy presence my delight.

Thy name shall dwell upon my tongue,

[ocr errors]

Thro' all the heav'nly road;

Thy truth and grace shall be my song

Till I get home to God.

Yes, in thy name I will rejoice,
And triumph in thy word;
United with my heart, my voice
Shall magnify the Lord.

[blocks in formation]

;

COME, Holy Spirit, come,
Let thy bright beams arise
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
The darkness from our eyes.

Convince us all of sin,

Then lead us to the Lord,
And to our wond'ring view reveal
The mercies of thy word.

Revive our drooping faith,

Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our souls the flame Of everlasting love.

Dwell thou within our hearts,

Our minds from bondage free; So shall we know, and praise, and love The Father, Son, and Thee.

HYMN 231. L. M.

ALMIGHTY Saviour, set me free
From the world's hard slavery;

And as my treasure is above,

Be there my heart, be there my love.

But oft, alas! too well I know,
My thoughts and love are fixed below;
In every
lifeless prayer I find

The heart unmov'd, the absent mind.

Oh, what that frozen heart can move
That melts not at the Saviour's love?
What can that sluggish spirit raise,
That will not sing the Saviour's praise?

HYMN 232. C. M.

THE saints on earth, and those above,
But one communion make;
Joined to their Lord in bonds of love,
All of his grace partake.

One family, we dwell in him;
One church, above, beneath;
Tho' now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death.
One army of the living God,
To his command we bow;
Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.
Lord Jesus, be our constant guide,
Then, when the word is given,
Bid death's cold flood its waves divide,
And land us safe in heaven.

HYMN 233. L. M.

By faith in Christ I walk with God,

With heav'n, my journey's end, in view; Supported by his staff and rod,

My road is safe, and pleasant too.
