Such guests shall to thy courts be led,
To banquet on thy love's repast;
And drink, as from the fountain's head,
Of joys that shall for ever last.

O. V. PSALM 37. c. M.

C.

THE Lord the good man's steps doth guide,

And all his goings bless :

To every work he takes in hand,

God giveth good success.

Tho' poor he be, yet he is sure
Not utterly to sink;

For God upholds him with his hand,
And from him will not shrink.

If rich, he giveth lib'rally,

And helps where there is need:
By which he shall from heav'n secure
A blessing to his seed.

For the salvation of the just

Doth come from God above;

Who in their trouble sends them aid,
With bounteous grace and love.

PSALM 38. C. M.

THY chast'ning wrath, O Lord, restrain,

Tho' I deserve it all;

Nor let at once on me the storm

Of thy displeasure fall.

My sins, that to a deluge swell,
My sinking head o'erflow;
And for my feeble strength to bear
Too vast a burden grow.

But, Lord, before thy searching eye my desires appear;

Let

For sure my prayers have been too loud,
Not to have reach'd thine ear.

Forsake me not, O Lord, my God,
Nor from me far depart;
Make haste to my relief, for thou
My great salvation art.

PSALM 39.

C. M.

LORD, let me know my term of days,
How soon my life will end!
And O, disclose the train of ills
Which this frail state attend.

My life thou makest but a span!
A cypher sums my years!
And every man, in best estate,
But vanity appears.

Man, like a shadow, vainly walks,
With fruitless cares opprest!
He heaps up wealth, but cannot tell
By whom 'twill be possest.

Why then should I on worthless toys
With anxious care attend?
On thee alone my steadfast hope
Shall ever, Lord, depend.

PSALM 40. L. M.

I WAITED meekly for the Lord,

'Till he should give a kind reply;

At length he did his ear afford,

And heard from heav'n my humble cry.

He brought me from the dismal pit,
Out of the deep and miry clay;
On solid ground he placed my feet,
And suffered not my steps to stray.
The wonders he for me has wrought,
Shall fill my lips with songs of praise;
And others, to his worship brought,
With hopes of like deliv'rance raise.

O. V. Second Version.

C. M.

THY tender mercies, Lord, from me
Withdraw not thou away;
But let thy love and verity
Preserve me night and day.
For I with many troubles am
Encompassed about!

My sins so greatly do increase,
I cannot count them out.
O Lord, I humbly thee require,
Send help, and set me free;
Give ear, O Lord, to my desire,
Make haste to succour me.

PSALM 42. C. M.

As pants the hart for cooling streams,
When heated in the chase;

So longs my soul, O God, for thee,
And thy refreshing grace.
For thee, my God, the living God,
My thirsty soul doth pine;

O when shall I behold thy face,
Thou Majesty divine?

My weary soul's cast down, but thinks
On thee and Zion still!

The plains that lie by Jordan's banks,
The dews of Hermon's hill.

Why restless-why cast down, my soul?
Trust God, and he'll employ

His power for thee; and change these sighs To thankful hymns of joy.

PSALM 43. L. M.

SINCE, Lord, thou art my only stay,
Why leav'st thou me in deep distress?
Why go I mourning all the day,

While cares my fainting heart oppress
?
Let me with light and truth be blest,
Be these my guides, and lead the way;
Till on thy holy hill I rest,

And in thy sacred temple pray.
Then will I there fresh altars raise
To God, who is my only joy;
And cheering songs of sacred praise
Shall all my grateful hours employ.

PSALM 44. C. M.

O LORD, our fathers oft have told
In our attentive ears,

Thy wonders in their days performed,
And elder times than their's.

As thee their God our fathers owned,
Be thou our sovereign King;
And as of old thou didst to them,

To us deliverance bring.

To thee the vict'ry we'll ascribe,
From whom the conquest came;
In God we'll triumph day by day,
And ever bless his name.

N. V.

Second Part. C. M.

AWAKE, arise ;-let seeming sleep
No more thine aid restrain :
Nor let us, Lord, who sue to thee,
For ever sue in vain.

Could we, forgetting thy great name,
On other help rely,

Would not the Searcher of all hearts
Our treacherous heart descry?

Arise then, Lord, and timely haste
To our deliverance make;
Redeem us, Lord,—if not for our's,
Yet for thy mercy's sake.

O. V.

PSALM 45.

S. M.

My heart shall now begin

A goodly song to sing,

The praise, that I shall shew, pertains To our almighty King.

Thy throne in heav'n, O God,

For ever shall remain,

Because the sceptre of thy realm
Doth righteousness maintain.
Wherefore this holy name

All ages shall record;

And all the earth give thanks to thee, For evermore the Lord.
