O THOU, whose all-enlivening ray
Can turn my darkness into day,
Disperse, great God, my mental gloom,
And with thyself my soul illume.
Tho' gath'ring sorrows fast increase,
Speak but the word,—and joy and peace
Shall set my troubled spirit free,
In sweet communion, Lord, with thee.
O Father of eternal light,

In fix'd and changeless glory bright,
I seek the wisdom from above,
Pure, holy, gentle, fervent love.

Let love divine my bosom sway,
And then my darkness will be day:

No doubts, no fears, shall rack my breast, For God himself will be

my rest.

[blocks in formation]

THOU hidden Love of God, whose height,
Whose depth unfathom'd, no man knows,
I see from far thy bounteous light,
Inly I sigh for thy repose.

Thy secret voice invites me still

The sweetness of thy yoke to prove,
And fain I would,—but tho' my will
Seems fix'd, yet wide my passions rove.
'Tis mercy all, that thou hast brought
My mind to seek her peace in thee;
Yet while I seek, but find thee not,
No

peace my wand'ring soul shall see.

Is there a thing beneath the sun,
That strives with thee my heart to share?
O cast it thence, and reign alone,
The Lord of ev'ry movement there.

HYMN 47. P. M.

COME let us anew our journey pursue,
Roll round with the year,

And never stand still, till the Master appear.
His adorable will let us gladly fulfil,

And our talents improve,

By the patience of hope, and the labour of love.

Our life is a dream; our time, as a stream, Glides swiftly away,

And the fugitive moment refuses to stay!

The arrow is flown, the moment is gone, While year after year

Rushes off from our view,-and Eternity's here!

Oh, that each in the day of his coming might say, "I have fought my way thro',

I have finished the work thou didst give me to do." Oh, that each from his Lord may receive the glad word,

“Well and faithfully done,

Enter into my joy, for the victory's won"!

HYMN 48. L. M.

ARM of the Lord, awake, awake!
Put on thy strength, the nations shake,
And let the world adoring see
Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

Say to the heathen, from thy throne,
"I am Jehovah, God alone!"
Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.

No more let earthly blood be spilt,
Vain sacrifice for human guilt!
But to each conscience be applied

The blood, that flowed from Jesu's side.
Almighty God, thy power proclaim
In every clime, of every name:
Let Satan's power before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all.

HYMN 49. P. M.

YE servants of God your Master proclaim,
And publish abroad his wonderful name;
The name all-victorious of Jesus extol,
His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.
God ruleth on high almighty to save,
And still he is nigh, his presence we have;
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.
Salvation to God, who sits on the throne,
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son;
The praises of Jesus all angels proclaim,
Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.
Then let us adore, and give him his right,
All glory, and power, and wisdom, and might;
All honour and blessing with angels above,
And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

HYMN 50. S. M.

How blessed are our ears,
That hear the joyful sound,

Which kings and prophets wish'd to hear,
And sought, but never found.

How blessed are our eyes,

That see this heavenly light, Which kings and prophets wished to see, But died without the sight. Make bare thine arm, O Lord, Send forth thy truth abroad; Let sinners everywhere behold Their Saviour and their God.

HYMN 51. P. M.

THOU God of truth and love,
We seek thy perfect way;
We seek thy will to prove,
Thy precepts to obey:

Shew us thy Gospel's bright design,
And let our wills be lost in thine.

O, that thou wouldst unite

In love our spirits here;
That all hereafter might

Around thy throne appear:

That all might meet before the Lamb,
And there thy deathless love proclaim!

Come, Lord, and make us bear
This blessed end in view,

And join with earnest care

To fight our passage through: Let Christians cheer each other on, Till all receive the starry crown!

BLESS'D are they, who mourn for sin, With godly sorrow mourn;

Who know its guilt, and feel its weight Too heavy to be borne.

When sinners thus behold their state,

And tremble at the sight,

Christ sees the travail of his soul,
And sees it with delight.

Tho' red like crimson are their sins,
He makes them white as snow;
Tho' far as east from west they reach,
Farther his mercies flow!

Thus all the saints, once sinners here,
Around the throne of God,

Have wash'd their robes, and made them white In his atoning blood

THE billows swell, the winds are high,
Clouds overcast my wintry sky;
Out of the depths to thee I call,

My fears are great, my strength is small.
O Lord, the pilot's part perform,

And guard, and guide me thro' the storm; Defend me from each threat'ning ill; Control the waves: say, "Peace, be still!"

Amidst the roarings of the sea,

Still hangs my soul her hopes on thee:
Thy constant love, thy faithful care,
Is all that saves me from despair!

HYMN 54. L. M.

SOVEREIGN Ruler of the skies,
Ever gracious, ever wise,
All my times are in thy hand,
All events at thy command.
