Times of sickness, times of health,
Times of penury and wealth;
Times of trial, times of grief,
Times of comfort and relief:

Times the tempter's pow'r to prove,
Times to taste a Saviour's love;
All must come, and last, and end,
As shall please my heavenly Friend.
Thee at all times will I bless;
Having thee, I all possess ;

How can I bereaved be,

While I never part from thee?

HYMN 55. C. M.

O THOU, from whom all mercies flow,
I lift my heart to thee;
In all my earthly times of woe,
Saviour, remember me.

When on my aching, burdened heart,
My sins lie heavily;

My pardon speak, thy peace impart,
In love remember me.

When piercing trials stop my way,
And ills I cannot flee;

O let my strength be as my day,
O Lord, remember me!

HYMN 56. L. M.

"Tis Christ supports this fainting frame, On him alone my hopes recline

[ocr errors]

The wondrous blessings of his name,

How wide they spread, how bright they shine!

Infinite wisdom! boundless power!
Unchanging faithfulness, and love-
On these I rest, while I adore,

And nothing shall my trust remove.
My God, if thou art mine indeed,
Then I have all my heart can crave;
A present help in time of need,
Still kind to hear, still strong to save.

[blocks in formation]

As when the weary traveller gains
The height of some commanding hill,
His heart revives, if o'er the plains
He sees his home, tho' distant still.
So when the Christian pilgrim views,
By faith, his mansion in the skies,
That sight his fainting strength renews,
And wings his speed to reach the prize.
The hope of heav'n his spirit cheers,
No more he grieves for sorrows past;
Nor any future conflict fears,

So he may safe arrive at last.

O Lord, on thee our hopes we stay,
To lead us on to thine abode;
Assured thy love will far o'erpay
The hardest labours of the road.

HYMN 58. C. M.

THO' dust and ashes in thy sight,
Thro' Christ we venture near;
Lord, teach us how to pray aright,
With rev'rence, and with fear.

Give deep humility;-the sense
Of godly sorrow give;
A strong, desiring confidence
To see thy face and live:-
Faith in the only Sacrifice,
That can for sin atone;

To cast our hopes, to fix our eyes,
On Christ, on Christ alone;

Patience to watch, and wait, and weep,
Tho' mercy long delay;

Courage our fainting souls to keep,
And trust thee, tho' thou slay."

HYMN 59. L.M.

As panting in the sultry beam
The hart desires the cooling stream,
So to thy presence, Lord, I flee,
So longs my soul, O God, for thee.
But rising griefs distress my soul,
And tears on tears successive roll;
For many an evil voice I hear,

To chide my woe, and mock my fear.
Yet why, by passing clouds oppress'd,
Should vexing thoughts distract my breast?
Turn, turn to him in every pain,
Whom never suppliant sought in vain.

HYMN 60. L. M.

PEACE, doubting heart;-my God's I am!
Who form'd me man, forbids to fear :
The Lord hath call'd me by my name;
The Lord protects, for ever near.

When passing thro' the wat'ry deep,
I ask in faith his promis'd aid;
The waves an awful distance keep,
And never gather round my head!
To him mine eye of faith I turn,
And thro' the fire pursue my way;
The fire forgets its pow'r to burn,

The lambent flames around me play!
Still nigh me, O my Saviour, stand,
And guard me in temptation's hour;
Hide in the hollow of thy hand;
And fix in me thy saving pow'r.

HYMN 61. C. M.

Он, let the Saviour be adored,
And not the poor despised;
Give to the hungry from your hoard,
But all, give all to Christ.

Go, clothe the naked, lead the blind,
Give to the weary rest;

For Sorrow's children comfort find,
And help for all distrest.

But give to Christ alone thy heart,
Thy faith, thy love supreme;
Then for his sake thine alms impart,
And so give all to him.

HYMN 62. L. M.

THERE is an unseen Power around,

Existing in the silent air :

Where treadeth man, where space is found, Unheard, unknown, that Power is there!

I

Not in the bright and busy day

Is man alone, 'midst crowds and cares; And not, when night, with solemn sway, Bids awe-hush'd souls breathe forth in pray'rs. When sinks the Christian's heart with woes, And scenes of suffering daunt his eye, He hears it whispered as he goes,

"A Power of mercy still is nigh"! The Power, that watches, guides, defends, Till man becomes a lifeless sod; Till earth is nought, nought earthly friends— That omnipresent Power—is God.

HYMN 63. L. M.

SUN of my soul, thou Saviour dear,
There is no night if thou art near:
Oh, may no clouds from earth arise,
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.
When fresh'ning dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.
Abide with me from morn till eve,
Apart from thee I cannot live :
Abide with me when night is nigh,
Apart from thee I dare not die.

HYMN 64. C. M.

THY neighbour ?-It is he, whom thou
Hast power to aid and bless ;
Whose aching heart, or burning brow,
Thy soothing hand may press.
