WHY

HYMN 212, C. M.

The Sealing of the Spirit.

HY should the children of a king
Go mourning all their days?-
Great Comforter! descend, and bring
Some tokens of thy grace.

2 Dost thou not dwell in all the saints,
And seal the heirs of heaven?
When wilt thou banish my complaints,
And show my sins forgiven?

3 Assure my conscience of her part
In the Redeemer's blood;

And bear thy witness with my heart,
That I am born of God.

4 Thou art the earnest of his love,
The pledge of joys to come;
And thy soft wings, celestial Dove!
Will safe convey me home.

HYMN 213, L. M.

Prayer against grieving the Spirit.

thou insulted Spirit! stay,
Though I have done thee such despite;
Cast not a sinner quite away,

Nor take thine everlasting flight.

2 Though I have most unfaithful been
Of all who e'er thy grace received;
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,
Ten thousand times thy goodness grieved ;—

3 Yet, Oh! the chief of sinners spare,
In honor of my great High-Priest;
Nor, in thy righteous anger, swear
I shall not see thy people's rest.
4 My weary soul, O God! release,
Uphold me with thy gracious hand;
Guide me into thy perfect peace,
And bring me to the promised land.

HYMN 214, L. M.

The Comforter.

SURE, the blest Comforter is nigh ;
'Tis he sustains my fainting heart;

Else would my hope for ever die,
And every cheering ray depart.
2 Whene❜er, to call the Saviour mine,
With ardent wish my heart aspires,-
Can it be less than power divine,

That animates these strong desires?
3 And, when my cheerful hope can say,-
I love my God and taste his grace,—
Lord! is it not thy blissful ray,

That brings this dawn of sacred peace? 4 Let thy good Spirit in my heart

HYMN 215, C. M.

The Necessity of renewing Grace.

1 HOW helpless guilty nature lies,

Unconscious of its load!

The heart, unchanged, can never rise
To happiness and God.

2 Can aught, beneath a power divine,
The stubborn will subdue ?
'Tis thine, eternal Spirit! thine,
To form the heart anew.

3 'Tis thine, the passions to recall,
And upward bid them rise;
To make the scales of error fall,
From reason's darkened eyes;-
4 To chase the shades of death away,
And bid the sinner live;

A beam of heaven-a vital ray,
'Tis thine alone to give.

5 Oh! change these wretched hearts of ours,
And give them life divine;

216

Then shall our passions and our powers,
Almighty Lord! be thine.

HYMN 216, C. M.

The Spirit desired.

1 REAT Father of each perfect gift!

G Behold thy servants wait;

mf

With longing eyes, and lifted hands,
We flock around thy gate.

2 Oh! shed abroad that choicest gift,-
Thy Spirit from above,

To cheer our eyes with sacred light,
And fire our hearts with love.

3 Blest Earnest of eternal joy!
Declare our sins forgiven:
And bear, with energy divine,

Our raptured thoughts to heaven.

4 Diffuse, O God! thy copious showers, That earth its fruit may yield,

HYMN 217, C. M.

The Outpouring of the Spirit.

✓ 1 LET songs of praises fill the sky!

[ocr errors]

Christ, our ascended Lord,

Sends down his Spirit, from on high,
According to his word.

2 The Spirit, by his heavenly breath,
New life creates within;

He quickens sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin.

3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And to our heart reveals;

Our bodies he his temple makes,
And our redemption seals.

mf 4 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,
With thy celestial fire;

Come, and, with flames of zeal and love,
Our hearts and tongues inspire.

HYMN 218, L. M.

The Operations of the Holy Spirit.

ETERNAL Spirit! we confess,

And sing, the wonders of thy grace;
Thy power conveys our blessings down,
From God the Father, and the Son.

2 Enlightened by thy heavenly ray,
Our shades and darkness turn to day;

Thine inward teachings make us know
Our danger, and our refuge too.

mf 3 Thy power and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin,
Do our imperious lusts subdue,

mf

mp

And form our wretched hearts anew.
4 The troubled conscience knows thy voice,
Thy cheering words awake our joys;
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

HYMN 219, C. M.

Prayer for the promised Spirit.
NTHRONED on high, almighty Lord!
The Holy Ghost send down:
Fulfill in us thy faithful word,

And all thy mercies crown.

2 Though, on our heads, no tongues of fire
Their wondrous powers impart,

Grant, Saviour! what we more desire,
Thy Spirit in our heart.

3 Spirit of life, and light, and love!.
Thy heavenly influence give;
Quicken our souls-born from above,
In Christ that we may live.

4 To our benighted minds reveal
The glories of his grace,

220

m

And bring us, where no clouds conceal
The brightness of his face.

5 His love within us shed abroad,-
Life's ever-springing well,-

Till God in us, and we in God,
In love eternal dwell.

HYMN 220, C. M.
Regeneration by the Spirit.

1 NOT all the outward forms on earth,

Nor rites that God has given,

Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heaven.

2 The sovereign will of God alone
Creates us heirs of grace.

Born in the image of his Son,
A new peculiar race.

3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
Breathes on the sons of flesh;
Creates anew the carnal mind,
And forms the man afresh.

mf 4 Our quickened souls awake, and rise, From the long sleep of death;

<

On heavenly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath

TRINITY.

HYMN 221, 6s and 4s.
Invocation.

mf 1 COME, thou almighty King!

f

mf

f

Help us thy name to sing,
Help us to praise :

Father! all-glorious,

O'er all victorious,

Come, and reign over us,

Ancient of days!

2 Come, thou incarnate Word!

Gird on thy mighty sword;
Our prayer attend:

Come, and thy people bless,
And give thy word success;
Spirit of holiness!

On us descend.

3 Come, holy Comforter!
Thy sacred witness bear,
In this glad hour:
Thou, who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power!

4 To the great One in Three,

The highest praises be,

Hence evermore!
