SAMUEL. 1 How the word of the Lord was first rerealed to Samuel 11 God telleth Samuel the destruction of Eli's house. 15 Samuel, though loth, telleth Eli the vision. 19 Samuel groweth in credit. a An the child Samuel mie istered unto the LORD before Eli. I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou† hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. 18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. Then tines at Eben-ezer. 3 They fetch the ark unto the terror of the Philistines. 10 They are smitten again, the ark taken, Hophni and Phinehas are slain. 12 Eli at the news, falling backward, breaketh his neck. ! 19 Phinehas wife, discouraged in her travail with I-chabod, dieth. SAMUEL. 3 ¶ And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us t fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, bwhich dwelleth between the cherubim : and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. 7 And the Philistines were afraid; for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing t heretofore. 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9 4 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 10 And the Philistines fought, and f Israel was smitten, and Deut. 23. 25, they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, † were slain. 5 ch. 2. 32. The death of Eli. 13 And when he came, lo, Eli | Before sat upon a seat by the way side CHRIST watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when ch. 1. 9. the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. † Heb. stood. 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and m his eyes m ch. 3. 2. were dim, that he could not see. 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. Dagon was left to him. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, ftread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day. 6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with iemerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god. 8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. SAMUEL. 5 And Samuel said, iGather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. 6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, m We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. 7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Miz peh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, tn Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. 9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD I heard him. 10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: P but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and dis2 Sam.22.14, comfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged | 17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD. CHAPTER VIII. 1 By occasion of the ill government of Samuel's sons, the Israelites ask a king. 6 Samuel praying in grief, is comforted by God:: 10 le telleth the manner of a king. 19| God willeth Samuel to yield unto the im-: portunity of the people. AND it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he amade his sons judges over Israel. 2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. 3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside dafter lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now fmake us a king to judge us like all the nations. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. g 7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not See Ex. 16. rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9 Now therefore I hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. 10 And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. 11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: IIe will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to |
