3 For swe ourselves also were sometime foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, liviug in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

3 'Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 fl thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

5 h Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

6 That the communication of thy faith may* become effectual, 'by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

7 For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints kare refreshed by thee, brother.

8 Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

9 Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such a one as Paul the aged, "and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 I beseech thee for my son "Onesimus, "whom I have begotten in my bonds:

11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

15 rFor perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, !a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, 'both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee aught, put that on mine account;

19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

21 J Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for «I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

CHAPTER I.

1 Christ in these Inst times coming to its from the Father, 4 is preferred above the angels, both in person ana office.

OD, who at sundry times \JT and a in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

2 Hath b in these last days c spoken unto us by his Son, d whom he hath appointed heir of all things, c by whom also he made the worlds;

3 'Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and (upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, >sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

4 Being made so much better than the angels, as khe hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, 'Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, mI will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

6 I And again, when he bringeth in n the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, "And let all the angels of God worship him.

7 And tof the angels he saith, Pwiio maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of tire.

8 But unto the Son he saith, ? Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: it sceptre of trighteousness is the sceptre of "thy kingdom.

10 And, 'Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.

THEREFORE we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should t let them slip.

2 For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and b every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

3 'How shall we escape, if we neglect so great Miration;'which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was e confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

4 fGod also bearing them witness, s both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, > according to his own will?

5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection k the world to come, whereof we speak.

6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the 6on of man, that thou visitest him?

7 Thou madest him I a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

8 mThou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection ■wat/ Christ assumed our nature.

13 And again, bI will put my trust in him. And again, 'Behold I and the children d which God hath given me.

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; fthat through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them, who s through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16 For verily t he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behooved him hto be made like unto his brethren, that he might be 'a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 k For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

CHAPTER in.

1 Chriftis more worthy than Moses, 7 therefore if we believe not in him, we shall be more worthy punishment than hardhearted Israel.

WHEREFORE, holy brethren, partakers of a the heavenly calling, consider bthe Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; 2 Who was faithful to him that

t appointed him, as also c Moses was faithful in nil his house.

3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as dhe who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

4 For every house is builded by some man; but ehe that built all things M God.

5 fAnd Moses verily we faithful in all his house as sa servant, hfor a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

6 But Christ as 'a son over his own house; kwhose house are we, I if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

11 So I sware in my wrath, tThey shall not enter'into my rest.

13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceit-fulness of sin.

14 For we are made partakers of Christ, °if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end;

15 While it is said, PTO day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16 iFor some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, r whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

18 And "to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

19 'Sowe see that they could not cuter in because of unbelief.

CHAPTER IV.

1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith. VI The power of (rod's word. 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God, subject to infirmities, but not sin, lfi we must and may go t/oblly to the throne of grace.

LET a us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto thera: but t the word preached did not profit them, I not being mixed with faith In them that heard it.

3 b For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, c As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, 'And God did rest the seventh day from all his w orks.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, eand they to whom lit was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, 'To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if I Jesus had given thera rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a I rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall f after the same example of I unbelief.

12 For the word of God is h quick, and powerful, and 'sharper than any *twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and ia 1 a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 m Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things arc naked "and opened unto the eyes of

him with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have 0 a great high priest, Pthat is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, ilet us hold fast our profession.

15 For rwe have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the fecliug of our infirmities; but »was in all point6 tempted like as we arc, 'yet without sin.

16 "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and lind grace to help in time of need.

CHAPTER V.

1 The authority and honour of our Saviour's priesthood. 11 \egfigence in the knowledge thereof is reproved.

IT'OR every high priest taken . from among men Ms ordained for men bin things pertaining to God, c that he may ofTer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

2 'Who 'can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that c he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

3 And 'by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

4 s And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as hwas Aaron.

5 'So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest; but he that said unto him, kThou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

0 As he saith also in another place, 'Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had m offered up prayers and supplicatiefhs ■ with strong crying and tears unto him 0 that was able to save him from death, and was heard 'Pin that he feared;

8 i Though he were a Son, yet learned he 'obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And s being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
