PSALM V. C. M.

FIRST VERSION.

Prayer to God, as a holy and gracious God.

1 INCLINE thine ear, O Lord, and let
My words have free access,
To thee, who art my God and King,
From whom I seek redress.

2 Such as be foolish shall not stand
In sight of thee, O Lord;
Vain workers of iniquity

Thou ever hast abhorr'd.

3 I therefore to thy house will come,
Relying on thy grace;
And rev'rently will worship thee
Towards thy holy place.

4 Lord, lead me in thy righteousness,
And disappoint my foes:
The way wherein I ought to walk
Before my face disclose

5 Thou with thy favour wilt increase
The just and righteous still;

And with thy grace, as with a shield, Defend their souls from ill.

[blocks in formation]

For the Lord's Day Morning.

1 LORD, in the morning thou shalt hear My voice ascending high;

To thee will I direct my prayer,
To thee lift up mine eye:

2 Up to the hills, where Christ is gone
To plead for all bis saints,
Presenting at his Father's throne,
Our songs and our complaints.

3 Thou art a God, before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand :
Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight,
Nor dwell at thy right hand.

4 But to thy house will I resort,
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thine holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

5 O may thy Spirit guide my feet
In ways of righteousness!
Make ev'ry path of duty straight
And plain before my face.

[blocks in formation]

The Penitent's Prayer and Triumph.

1 SPARE me, Lord, nor o'er my head The fullness of thy vengeance shed; With pitying eye my weakness view, Heal my vex'd soul, my strength renew. 2 And O, if yet my sins demand

The wise corrections of thy hand,

Yet give my pains their bounds to know,
And fix a period to my woe.

3 While clouds of grief around me roll,
And hostile storms invade my soul,
Return, great God, return and save
Thy servant from the greedy grave.

PSALM VII. L. M.

God's Observance of, and Displeasure at, the Wicked. 1 TO God, my soul, for help repair

Who makes the faithful heart his care; Th' impartial Judge, whose eyes each day, Indignant, scenes of guilt survey.

2 If man his law refuse to know,

He whets his sword, he bends his bow,
He tips with fire the fatal dart,
Ordain'd to pierce the rebel's heart.

3 Sin's baneful growth do thou control, And guard from ill the upright soul; For thou, just Lord, with searching eye, The heart and inmost reins canst try.

PSALM VIII. C. M.

The Glory and Condescension of the Creator. 1 THOU, to whom all creatures bow, Within this earthly frame;

Through all the world how great art thou ;
How glorious is thy name!

2 When heav'n, thy beauteous work on high, Employs my wond'ring sight:

The moon that nightly rules the sky,
With stars of feebler light:

3 What's man, say I, that, Lord, thou lovʼst To keep him in thy mind?

Or what his offspring, that thou prov'st
To them so wondrous kind?

4 0 thou, to whom all creatures bow,
Within this earthly frame;

Through all the world how great art thou!
How glorious is thy name!

PSALM IX. C. M.

Praise to God as the sure Refuge of his Saints, 1 TO celebrate thy praise, O Lord, I will my heart prepare ;

To all the list'ning world thy works,
Thy wondrous works, declare.

2 The thoughts of them shall to my soul
Exalted pleasure bring;

While to thy name, O thou Most High, Triumphant praise I sing.

3 God is a constant sure defence
Against opposing rage;

As troubles rise, his needful aids
In our behalf engage.

4 All those who have his goodness prov'd,
Will in his truth confide,
Whose mercy ne'er forsook the man,
That on his help rely'd.

PSALM X. C. M.

Prayer heard, Saints saved, and Oppressors punished. 1 WHY doth the Lord stand off so far, And why conceal his face,

When great calamities appear,
And times of deep distress?

2 Lord, shall the wicked still deride.
Thy justice and thy pow'r?

Shall they advance their heads in pride,
And still thy saints devour?
