Creations.-Prince of Wales-Prince Edward, 2nd son of King Edward the First, was created Prince of Wales a few days after his birth, in April 1284; but having, in consequence of the death of his elder brother, Prince Alphonso, succeeded to the Throne of his father as King Edward the Second, the Principality became united to the Crown. Edward the Third, his son, was never Prince of Wales, but he invested his son, Edward the Black Prince, with the Principality in 1343, since which time the eldest son of the Crown of England has borne the title of Prince of Wales, usually by creation, but in some few cases simply by being so declared.

Great Steward of Scotland, Duke of Rothsay, &c.-The high office which gave name to the Royal and Noble House of Stuart, was granted to its ancestor, Walter, the son of Alan, and confirmed by Malcolm the Fourth in 1157, to him and his heirs, who continued to hold it in lineal descent till Robert the Stewart ascended the Throne of Scotland in 1371, as King Robert the Second. King Robert the Third, son and successor of Robert the Second, was created Earl of Carrick in 1363, and by Act of Parliament in 1469, the titles of Prince and High Steward of Scotland, Duke of Rothsay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, and Lord of the Isles, were vested in the eldest son and heir apparent of the Crown of Scotland for ever.

Duke of Cornwall.-King Edward the Third created his eldest son, Edward the Black Prince, Duke of Cornwall, with limitation to him and his heirs, eldest sons and heirs apparent to the Crown of England, for ever, by Patent in 1337.

Earl of Chester.-Edward Prince of Wales, then eldest son of King Edward the First, was created Earl of Chester in 1304. Edward the Third, his son, though never Prince of Wales, bore the title of Earl of Chester before his accession to the throne; he created his son Edward the Black Prince, and subsequently his grandson, afterwards King Richard the Second, Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, and this Earldom was by Act of Parliament in 1397, the 21st year of the latter monarch, united to the principality of Wales, since which period it has always been joined in the Patents of creation to the Prince of Wales.

Earl of Dublin.-Her Majesty was pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignity of an Earl of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland unto His Royal Highness Albert-Edward, Prince of Wales, K.G., and his heirs, Kings of the said United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for ever, by the name, style, and title of Earl of Dublin; 10 Sept. 1849.
