OW to STOP, and WHEN to STOP: Punctuation reduced to a System. By WILLIAM DAY. Fifth Edition, 1s. 6d.

"Acute in parts, and useful for more advanced students; that is, for such as have acquired the principles of English grammar. Some popular writers whom we could name would do well to spend a week over this volume. In this age the most useful things are often the last to be learned." ATHENEUM.

"The success of this little book is well deserved. It fairly fulfils, within a small space, the promise of its title; and thus supplies what has long been wanted-a concise and clear exposition of the part borne by punctuation in the art of composition."-GLOBE.

"At the risk of trespassing upon that refinement, which, though false, is far from uncommon, I must be allowed to remark, that, notwithstanding so many editions of the Commentary have long circulated through the United Kingdom, I am mistaken, if any copy, among them all, has equalled the present. The convenience of its size, the accuracy of its execution, the moderateness of its price, and the general beauty of its appearance, conspire to invite comparison, and render honest censure impossible." "We take our leave of this remarkable work, which we hold to be, beyond a doubt, the most remarkable of the works in which the laws of astronomy and the appearances of the heavens are described to those who are not mathematicians nor observers, and recalled to those who are."

from the "Quarterly Review," No. CLXIX. June 1849.

NOTE. Since these sheets were revised for press, Sir John Herschel has published an enlarged edition of his Elementary Treatise on Astronomy, mentioned at page 3.* The principal additions are in the departments of Physical and of Sidereal Astronomy, both of which appear to be entirely re-written. In the former he has given a rational, not a technical, elucidation of the lunar and planetary perturbations, including the disturbance of Uranus by Neptune, which led to the discovery of the latter; and in doing this he has illustrated a very difficult subject in a manner essentially new and original, as well as elementary. In the Sidereal department he has embodied several of the results of his own Cape Observations detailed in the preceding pages, and also some of those contained in Struve's Etudes d'Astronomie Stellaire. All this is a very decided improvement. We must, however, express a hope that this larger work (price 18s.) will not interrupt the issue of the unpretending volume of Lardner's Cyclopædia (price only 6s.), which has been found of such extensive utility in elementary education.-Page 31.

But amidst these serious and systematic employments he found time for writing two admirable elementary works in Dr. Lardner's Cyclopædia; one on Astronomy, the other on the Study of Natural Philosophy. They unite elegant and perspicuous language with logical order, great simplicity, and most apt illustrations, and have contributed in no small degree to the extended and popular reputation of their author.-Page 3.

from the "Examiner” newspaper, May 19, 1849.

Astronomy consists of certain exquisite trains and tissues of geometrical reasoning, which cannot be explained by vague description or familiar illustration; but wherever the subject admitted of such treatment, nothing could exceed the originality and freshness of its descriptive detail, the sparkling clearness of its explanations, or the astonishing play of imagination and fancy with which the language of the writer sustained his reasoning and lighted up his thoughts. Probably no book ever written upon any science, has been found to embrace in so small a compass an entire epitome of everything known within all its various departments, practical, theoretical, and physical. Such was the treatise now enlarged into this Outlines of Astronomy. Sir John Herschel has wisely preserved the original design of the work as one of explanation, but has altogether remodelled it. In the earlier portions more especially, much new matter is introduced. To all intents and purposes, indeed, Outlines of Astronomy must be considered a new work—so careful has been the revision, correction, and remodelling of the original treatise; so numerous the additions to it; and so important the new trains of inquiry opened up into one of the most beautiful as well as difficult of all the branches of the science....... In closing this book we can only repeat of the writer, that we regard him as the first ornament of our age, and the man who will confer upon it an additional claim to the grateful regard of succeeding ages. He has in a great measure done for them what Bacon did for us. The investigation of the laws of nature will be simpler in all coming time, for the connected system of general rules of philosophising which he has embodied in his immortal Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy. And we will conclude with the hope that he may shortly be able to do for that work what he has here accomplished for his Treatise on Astronomy, and present it in a larger, more extended, and mo.e complete form to the world.

NNALS of the ARTISTS of SPAIN. By WILLIAM STIRLING, Esq. 3 vols. demy 8vo. profusely illustrated with Portraits and other Engravings on Steel, Wood, and Stone, £3. 3s.

"Of the merits of the Annals of the Artists of Spain,' both in design and execution, we can speak highly. Mr. Stirling's style is generally correct, always easy, and sometimes forcible. He can hit off a portrait with his pen almost in the spirit of Velasquez with his pencil. (1) Mr. Stirling has produced one of the most complete contributions to the literature of the fine arts which our language has possessed. (2) He has exhausted the entire Spanish school and all that has been written on the subject by foreigners. (3) We are bound to say of these splendid volumes, that they deserve a place among the most elaborate and carefully-written books which have appeared in this country for many years. (4) (1) Times.
