Coast and Geodetic Survey-Field Sta- tions-Navigational aids and the use of the charts-International III M71184 PREFACE This publication covers the coasts of Palawan, Mindanao, and Sulu Archipelago with adjacent waters. It includes a short description of the northeast coast of Borneo, bordering on Philippine waters, founded upon surveys by officers of the British Navy. The description of the Philippine Islands and waters is based mainly upon the work of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, including the results of a special examination made during 1937 and 1938. Surveys are still in progress on the west coast of Palawan and in the area adjacent to the international boundary between the Commonwealth of the Philippines and British North Borneo. The notes relating to those areas have been compiled from various sources, principally from the Spanish Derrotero, the British Admiralty Eastern Archipelago Pilot, and the British Admiralty China Sea Pilot, with additions and corrections reported by government vessels and the mercantile marine. Navigators are requested to notify the Director of Coast Surveys, Manila, P. I., or the Director, United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington, D. C., of any errors or omissions that they may find in this publication, or of any additional matter which should be inserted for the information of mariners. Corrections and additions affecting all Coast Pilot volumes are included in Notice to Mariners, published weekly by the United States Coast Guard, and in the Philippine Islands Notice to Mariners, published quarterly at Manila by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The aids to navigation mentioned in this pilot are those effective, according to the latest information, on September 30, 1939. A supplement, giving the more important changes to the text, is issued about a year after a Coast Pilot volume is published, and again at approximately yearly intervals thereafter until a revised edition appears. Each supplement is complete in itself and cancels all previous issues. The date of the latest supplement to each Coast Pilot is given in the List of Coast Pilots published quarterly in Notice to Mariners, and annually in the Philippine Islands Notice to Mariners. In using this volume reference should be made to the latest supplement and to Notice to Mariners issued subsequent to the volume or supplement, and due regard should be given to the possibility of changes having occurred since the date of the latest of these publications. The supplement may be obtained, free of charge, upon application to the Director of Coast Surveys, Manila, P. I., the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington, D.
