J/H E river Ckuban is the Hypanis of Herodotus and Strabo, and the Vardanes of Ptolemy; but its sources, which that geographer has not determined, are placed far too much to the west, towards the narrow Albanian passes, in the maps projected to his work by Gerhard Mercator in 1578; for which there is no authority in the text of Ptolemy himself.
