T WILL be noticed by all observant readers that whenever the mortal statistics are referred to by the believers in diphtheria antitoxin, that "death rate" is the term used, and never do they refer to the actual number of deaths from diphtheria. Whether there are more deaths since the use of antitoxin began, or whether there are less deaths, does not appear by this adroit way of giving the statistics. "Death rate" means simply the per cent. of deaths of all cases of diphtheria reported. Since the use of antitoxin has become well nigh universal, the custom of diagnosing every case of sore throat as diphtheria has also become universal. This brings the total number of cases reported up to figures much above the facts, and although the actual number of deaths remain the same, or even greater, yet the "death rate" would be lowered. A trick of the trade. C Catarrh of the Bladder. ATARRH of the bladder may be either acute or chronic. The chronic cases usually result from badly treated acute cases. Flaxseed water should be freely used. Hot water either as applications or irrigations are very helpful. Avoid all stimulants, fluid nourishment, raw vegetables such as celery, onions, lettuce, radishes and cabbage. The leaves of buchu are an excellent herbal remedy -two teaspoonfuls of the leaves boiled in a half pint of water, the whole to be taken twice a day. In acute cases the patient should keep in bed. Old and feeble persons may be allowed a little stimulus. A good treatment for the hair is to loosen the scalp every day. Take a portion of it between the fingers of the two hands and push it together, so that it is loosened and momentarily raised. Do this on every portion of the head, thoroughly. This keeps the scalp loose and the hair follicles closed. One of the first indications of baldness is a stretching of the skin, the hair follicles thus becoming open and letting the hair fall out. DR. JOHN D. MILES, DIVINE HEALING. More Vitality Besides Feeling Fine Every Minute." So writes a New York business man after a few weeks' in. structions in scientific eating. MORE VITALITY BECAUSE his food was selected right, combined right. proportioned right, chemically harmonious and perfectly balanced, appetite satisfied and meals delicious; all the nutrition in his food was used by his body-nothing to make waste or toxic poisons. MORE BUSINESS BECAUSE of more vitality, more energy and more endurance-and hence a more cheerful mind and a more attractive personality. MORE MONEY BECAUSE his earning power was doubled-"Besides feeling fine every minute." A sufferer for years from intestinal congestion, stomach trouble, nervousness and the ills that follow these conditions. This is but one example of the hundreds who have acknowledged in writing the benefits they have received from Applied Food Chemistry, my system of scientific dieting, which is becoming more universally recognized every day among thoughtful people. I DO NOT CURE DISEASE, I teach you how to remove its causes-Nature will do the curing. I teach you how to select, combine and balance your food, according to your individual requirements. My work is scientific, practical and fundamental. It goes down to causes and removes them. This is the only true road to health. I most earnestly invite your investigation of my method of teaching the simple science of human nutrition. Ninety-two per cent of all human disease is caused by errors in eating. Is not this subject worth your attention? Send for my new book "HOW FOODS CURE." Mailed FREE together with diagnosis blank. EUGENE CHRISTIAN, Food Scientist, 7 East 41st Street, New York. CHRISTIAN'S HEALTH-ORIUM IS AT LAKEWOOD, N. J., Suite 88 Prescribing Tissue Remedies. Query: In your opinion can any one be prosecuted on the grounds of claiming the cell salts to be drugs?-L. B., Hartford, Conn. Answer: I hardly understand just what you mean by your question, unless you mean your prosecutors could claim the cell salts to be drugs and therefore prosecute you for using them. They do not have to show you are prescribing drugs. The ground of their prosecution will be that you are attempting to diagnose disease and to prescribe a remedy for which you accept a fee. If you tell the patient what is the matter, and then fur nish him a remedy and charge a fee, you will be regarded as practicing medicine, whatever you may happen to give. Any one has a right to sell a remedy, but he must not pose as a doctor. They may recommend a remedy for certain conditions, but they are not allowed to tell the patient that they know what his condition is, and prescribe a remedy for it. If I have misunderstood your question, kindly write me again. I know of one case dealing in tissue salts that was prosecuted (Mrs. Emily Bresee, Omaha, Neb.), but she beat her prosecutors on the ground that she did not diagnose disease, but simply sold the tissue remedies to whoever wanted them. IT WILL PAY TO INVESTIGATE THE ENSIGN REMEDIES If you are in bad health in any degree, it will pay you well to investigate the Ensign Remedies. These Remedies contain what are known as inorganic food-stuffs. They do not contain crude drugs, do not produce toxic effects, or injure any organ of the body, or impair any function. You are not doped or dosed, but fed with what we have proven to be the most essential elements in any kind of food. And we present these food-stuffs in form for immediate assimilation. In ordinary food these food-stuffs must be prepared for assimilation, and it is the loss of the function of preparing some particular food-stuff for assimilation which causes disease. Therefore the Ensign Remedy for that particular trouble supplies the deficiency and restores function so that the missing element can be again taken from the ordinary food. That is a genuine cure. We have literature explaining all this, and it is free for the asking. We have a booklet on General Disease, one on Private Diseases, one on Women's Diseases (New Edition) one on Varicose Veins and Varicocele, one on the Heart, and a variety of leaflets, all or any of which will be sent you on request, free. Write us today. It will be the turning point in your troubles. ENSIGN REMEDIES CO., Department A, Canadian Office, Windsor, Ont. BATTLE CREEK, MICH. W.S. ENSIGN, Phys. Ch. A Good Cough Syrup. Query: I have been troubled each winter for some five or six years with itching skin, especial limbs and arms Bathing seems to relieve it for a day or two, but it always returns. As soon as the weather becomes warm this itching disappears and does not come on again until cold weather. I also notice that I am inclined to be constipated during the winter months, but do not experience much trouble that way in summer time. I get a fair amount of outdoor exercise.-S. W., Ohio. and poison the system. This throws upon the skin an extra function which produces the itching, and sometimes an eruption occurs. During the summer months the natural perspiration of the skin and your free use of water and other habits which keep the bowels regular break up this condition until winter comes again. There are a great many such cases. Yours is a perfectly typical one. I believe I can help you. My advice would be as follows: Oatmeal gruel three times a day, to which might be added a tablespoonful of cream. The oats should be well cooked, preferably made from the plain oatmeal, rather than the oatmeal that is sold in boxes. Follow this diet exclusively for a few weeks. If you drink tea or coffee it should be after you have finished eating, and then without cream and sugar. An Old-Fashioned Tonic. Take fluid extract of gentian, one-half ounce. Take fluid extract of blue cohosh, one ounce. Take fluid extract of hops, one-half ounce. Mix. Dose, a teaspoonful between meals. |
