REPAIRING THE BODY

THE ENSIGN REMEDIES

[graphic]

Nature does that if you give her the material to do it with, in form so she can use it. All material must be prepared for use. If you were repairing a brick house, lime and sand would be of no use unless it was properly mixed with water; and a tree would be of no use until it was sawed into lumber. The food that you eat is not ready for immediate assimilation. It must be

chewed and mixed with saliva, then churned and mixed in the stomach and digested with acids, then mixed with the alkaline secretions in the duodenum, and then as it passes the little mouths along the intestines, each set takes some particular part out of the mass and appropriates it for the repair of organs and to replace wornout tissues everywhere. If for some reason, like overwork, the little absorbents fail to take up the special elements they are designed to handle, then there is a shortage of that particular element. That is malassimilation and means ill-health. If at this time a specially prepared supply of elements is given the system, ready for immediate assimilation so as to supply the unusual demand caused by the overwork, then the little absorbents can resume work as before, and the ill-health is gone. This is the sensible way to get rid of it. The usual way is to pour into the intestinal tract a lot of foreign substances, thus arousing the system to a desperate effort to prevent the absolute destruction of the body. This is called "stimulating" the body or certain functions, and the foreign substances are called "stimulants", "alteratives", "tonics", etc. Their so-called action is the reaction of the system against them. They are poisons, differing only in degree. Some kill at once, others more slowly, and others maim, cripple and incapacitate. All injure, for it is a repetition of the overwork which brought on the original trouble. When you stimulate you cause the organ stimulated to do more work than it is prepared to do properly, so it is followed by depression as the system is not able to keep up the pace. Alcohol is not the only stimulant, nor the use of intoxicating liquors the only intemperance. Any element which stimulates, whether used as a food or a medicine, is intemperate, unreasonable and destructive. When your system needs help, use the elements which it uses in health, and the result will be health. Such elements are found in the Ensign Remedies in form for im nediate use for repairing the body. Find out about them by reading our literature. We have booklets on General Diseases, Women's Diseases. Varicose Veins and Varicocele, the Heart and numerous leaflets. All or any free for the asking. milk is too constipating, and should not be allowed. Various meat soups, and beef tea and solid food may be allowed whenever the appetite craves it.

Startling, If True!

Dr. W. B. Clarke is quoted by a New York paper as saying:

"Cancer steadily pursues its relentless march, slaying its thousands and tens of thousands, slaying the Grants and Gladstones of the world, or the most eminent physicians and surgeons, with as little leniency as it displays toward their humblest and most helpless followers. In the State of New York 6,400 adults died of cancer in 1907! In other words, to bring the subject intimately close, in an ordinary man's lifetime about 300,000 people will succumb to the disease in this

State.

"As cancer was practically unknown until cowpox vaccination began to be introduced, it is certainly about time to study out the possible connection between the two. Cancer, 1 believe, is a disease of cell life, a disturbance of its equilibrium, manifested by the rapid growth of cells and the consequent building up of a tumor. I have had to do with at least 200 cases of cancer, and here declare that I never saw a case of cancer in an unvaccinated person. This of itself may not mean anything; but I ask all physicians to pursue their

inquiries along this line and see what will result.

"The way vaccination causes cancer is like this: It takes twenty-one years to make a man and but four to make a cow, the former being of slow cell growth and the latter rapid. To put the rapid-growing cells, or protoplasm, of a diseased animal (in a condition of virulent infectious activity) into the slow-growing cells of man-as is done in vaccination and the various forms of blood assassinations now rife in 'civilized' countries (often enforced by law, health departments or boards of education)-is to disturb the equilibrium of cell life and create that disparity, disarrangement and disorganization which, when the season for cancer comes late in life, results in cancer, if not tuberculosis earlier."

Fletcherism.

By Carl J. Luyties, M. D., St. Louis, Mo. The views of Horace Fletcher, of New York, on the subject of nutrition is one of the subjects at present occupying the public mind. These views are spoken of as "Fletcherism" and are interesting, though not entirely new to the medical profession. He claims that his views are founded on Nature and that Nature alone knows what is good for us.

He also claims, and correctly, that many people have acquired improper habits, such as hasty eating, bolting the food, eating THE COLUMBUS MEDICAL JOURNAL.

Dr. Langworthy's School of Chiropractic

whether hungry or not, eating too much and too often, and that these habits are often the cause of much physical and mental distress. Three meals a day he considers too many. One should never eat anything unless there is a vigorous, true appetite. By this true appetite he does not mean an "all-goneness" or gnawing of the stomach, but an increased salivary secretion or watering of the mouth. The skipping of a meal, he says, will do no harm, and is likely to do anybody good.

Another "Fletcher rule" is to taste every morsel of food until there is no taste left in it. This can only be done by thoroughly mixing the food with the saliva by means of mastication. By following this rule it will soon be found that the appetite is always satisfied before the stomach is full. For this reason alone I would consider and advocate Fletcherism as an agreeable method of reducing the weight. While dieting and exercising are often recommended for this purpose, these things are not always easy for most stout people to do conscientiously. And the injudicious use of drugs on the market for this purpose I consider harmful.

Horace Fletcher further contends, and 1

agree with him, that by satisfying the appetite in this manner there are no unpleasant symptoms, as tightness of the waist-band, shortness of breath, but on the contrary, there is a new sense of abounding vitality, lightness of heart, sweetness of temper and alertness of intellect. Another great thing in favor of Fletcherism is the economy one is able to practice and which is noticed in the great saving in the bill for supplies. I can well understand that the grocers and butchers are not in sympathy with the Fletcher idea.

Sunburn.

Query: I have a very fair skin; will you advise me about sunburn, as to its prevention, if possible, or its cure?-J. M., N. Y.

Answer: The best way is to pay no attention to the sunburn unless it actually causes the epidermis to come off. If that is the case I would advise you to get Fuller's earth, which

is a fine powder, and dust the affected parts with it in the afternoons when coming home from work and at night before going to bed. If there is not enough moisture in the skin to cause the powder to adhere, moisten it a little with olive oil, just enough to make a paste, and put it on very lightly.

The Natural Child a Builder.

By A. R. Lindsay, M. D., Portland, Oregon, Author of Nero Psychology.

This takes me back to a scene that I know will be in my soul forever. It is the old fireplace, with its back log and "foresticks" and "dog irons." On the right hand side of the fireplace, at the close of this winter's day, I see my father sitting, holding a tin bucket between his knees, and I hear the clatter of the grains of corn as they fall into the bucket, for he is getting ready to send to the mill corn for our meal. Mother is sitting right before the fire reading the weekly paper aloud; sister is nursing the cat and the kittens are playing about the floor. I, the baby of the household, a child of six, was on the left of the fireplace, directly opposite my father, for I was eagerly watching for the cobs as he threw them across to me, for I was building a cob house-expressing that which is the prevailing nature of any normal individual.

Mind, body and soul, all that I was, was absorbed in that building. I had one care above any other, and that was that in two bushels of corn there would be enough red cobs for the chimney, according to the plan of my structure, and no one would doubt that all of my soul was in that building. seeing how I suffered when the careless, playful puppy came romping in and with his tail knocked my playhouse down. Dr. Jos. Holt, of New Orleans, Ex-President of the State Board of Health of Louisiana, says: "Ihave prescribed BUFFALO LITHIA WATER in affections of the kidneys and urinary passages, particularly in Gouty subjects, in Albuminuria, and in irritable condition of the Bladder and Urethra in females. The results satisfy me of its extraordinary value in a large class of cases most difficult to treat."

T. Griswold Comstock, A. M., M. D., St. Louis, Mo., says: "I have made use of BUFFALO LITHIA WATER in Gynecological practice, in women suffering from acute Uræmic conditions, with results, to say the least, very favorable."

Dr. J. T. Answer: Your case is undoubtedly one of spinal paralysis. Your letter does not give any clue whatever as to how you happen to have spinal paralysis. You do not speak of any accident or sprain, having accidentally taken poison, having had spinal meningitis or anything that most commonly causes spinal paralysis. However, your symptoms point directly to this condition, especially your "funny feelings," as you call it, just before you urinate or have a passage of the bowels.

My treatment for such a case would be hand massage, rubbing into the spine stimulating remedies. I think also you ought to have a wheel chair that you are able to operate with your hands. Whether the injury to the spinal cord is beyond repair, I am not able to say. If there is actual softening of

the cord and destruction of the tissues, it cannot be cured, but perhaps something can

The Subconscious Mind.

Dr. Bloomer, in his annual report of the Butler Hospital at Providence, Rhode Island, says:

"The word 'subconscious' is being worked overtime everywhere and is apparently a sweet morsel on the tongues of the people who think they know what it means. My only warrant for this animadversion is the harm which I believe is done, especially among women, by dabbling in matters which were better left alone, for, alas, those who affect such studies, if one may call them. that, are too often people whose nervous mechanism is unequal to the strain involved."

I wonder how many of my readers agree with Dr. Bloomer!

live some years yet, and hope to be able to do some more good for humanity before I pass out.

Excuse me if I insinuate here a well-tried antidote for all forms of malaria, especially typhoid: Generous applications inside and out of cranberries. A good remedy for ery. sipelas, also.

Abscess of the Liver.

Query: I should like to ask you whether you can tell what ails my mother. She has been ailing for several weeks. I feel sure it started from catarrh of the stomach. We did everything we could think of and the trouble seemed to scatter. For days she had aching in legs, with stiff back and burning sensation in bowels, with great weariness. We used Sloan's liniment on back and hips and the pain went upward and at last settled in right side. Then the pain was so intense that she could do nothing but walk the floor for five nights. It felt as though a boil was trying to force out under right shoulder and below right breast. Sloan's liniment drew out very red, angry looking sores below right shoulder and breast. These did not open and the pain outside felt like pain inside. The doctor said it was congestion of liver, gave calomel tablets, etc., which were mild, applied antiphlogistine plaster and recommended quiet. But the pain is still so great
