Almighty God, open Thou mine eyes, that I may see the wondrous things of Thy Law, through Christ our Lord. Amen. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. Order my steps in thy word, and let not iniquity have dominion over me. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. N these texts, which I have taken from several places, you will see that the Bible is spoken of by three different names. It is called the "Scriptures," which means something that is inscribed or written. It is called the "Word," because it contains God's words. You see He has put His commands, His wishes, and His love for us into words, so that we should all be able to know what they are. Then the Bible is called the "Law," because what is written in it is God's law or command to His children. If any one breaks the law of England, he is brought before some judge who punishes him for what he has done or left undone. In the same way, if any one breaks the law of God, he will be brought before the great Judge of all men, and will have to answer for his sin. It is your own fault if you say that you do not know what the law of God is. It is written very plainly in the Bible. If you shut your eyes to that which is written for your learning, and close your ears and your hearts when God's words are read to you, you can blame no one but yourself. Unless you read the Bible with earnestness and thought, you will stray away from the road that leads to heaven. to you as it was to the Psalmist David, a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path. At the same time we are warned against the danger there is in being only "hearers." It is of no use at all to know a law, unless we obey it. On the contrary, it doubles our sins in the sight of God. For the Word of God should be If a poor little ignorant child, who had never been taught right from wrong, were to take something that was not his, it would certainly be stealing, but who would not pity the child sooner than blame him? But you who know God's commandment, who have heard His Word, who know that theft is a breaking of the law of God as well as of the law of man, you would have no excuse. You would be punished on earth, and unless you repented truly, and earnestly mended your ways, you would be punished also by the great Judge of quick and dead, when you stand before Him at the last awful day. "Be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." There are some who read their Bibles regularly, but who do it as a mere form. They perhaps pride themselves on their daily reading. To such there is a great danger. It is true that the Word is able to save your soul, but remember, it must be received with meekness.
