found in making his choice, we may be excused making a sample of the selections. Still we may refer to what he says about Queen Elizabeth as being of first interest, and especially as to the prosperity of England in her reign, which can only be parallelled by that of the present. We must say that many of Dr. Grosart's translation of latin sentences seem unnecessary. Those likely to use and appreciate this book are safe to know enough latin for that purpose.

We continue our notices of antiquarian magazines :

Lincolnshire Notes and Queries is now in its third volume, and maintains the high standard with which it commenced. Dr. Mansel Sympson has taken the place of Mr. Grange, as coeditor. Each part contains an excellent illustration, and most readers will be interested in the portrait of that eminent antiquary the late Sir Charles Anderson, which is accompanied by a biographical notice of him, and an almost complete list of his works. We are given a very good facsimile of a very perfect twelfth-century charter of Haversholme Priory. Mr. Jean's excellent catalogue, which is separately paged now comes to an end. It appears that it is to form the basis of an illustrated work, dealing with the subject, Lincolnshire brasses, in detail.

The Quarterly Journal of the Berks Archæological and Architectural Society has been issued. It commenced in April, 1889, under the editorship of the Rev. P. H. Ditchfield, the Hon. Secretary. The society is but a small one, and therefore the more credit is due to Mr. Ditchfield and the committee for the production of a very excellent and well printed serial, and we are inclined to think that in many instances the production by a society of a serial is better than the issue of "Transactions" at irregular intervals. The paper on the Vachell family is interesting, and the photograph of the interior of a medieval dovecot with its curious revolving ladder is specially attractive.

Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset under Messrs. Weaver and Mayo shows no sign of falling away. A valuable feature is Mr. G. S. Fry's calendar of Dorset Administrations, but we wish the editors would allow a larger number to be printed in each part. Many of the numbers have very excellent illustrations, and we would specially call attention to the pretty chromo of the disused church of St. Matthew's, at Wareham. The photo of a prehistoric boat found near Glastonbury, and another of the Dorset ooser," a mask used in local revels, should be noticed. Fenland Notes and Queries continues to do good work in that district under Mr. Sweeting's editorship.

The second number of Wiltshire Notes and Queries still maintains the promise shown at the commencement. It contains a good autotype of an almhouse at Devizes which it seems is likely to be demolished.

Gloucestershire Notes and Queries" is a good medium for literary and other suitable advertisements, which will be received by the Editor.

SPECIAL NOTICE-Volume Six will commence with the next number for January-March, being number XIII. of the new series. With the new volume we propose to give each quarter a short Summary of Events in the County during the preceeding three months, directing attention to such subjects as are likely to interest our readers. Arrangements have been made with Mr. Cecil Davis for a series of illustrated Articles on Gloucestershire Brasses, which it is intended shall be of an exhaustive character. An improved paper will be adopted specially suited for illustrations, which we hope may be more numerous in the forthcoming volume.

It was intended that the Index to vol. V. should have been issued with this number, but time has not permitted of its completion early enough for this purpose, and its issue is necessarily postponed.
