great violence may safely be predicted." The Duke of Wellington's signature appears as an illustration in a paragraph on the handwriting of servants and tradespeople whose education is "mingled with conceited ignorance and false pride"! If Miss Thoyts can be induced to delete the whole of the chapter in her next edition the book will be the better for it. But the grave fault of the work is that the reader is given no help in deciphering ancient writings. A novice may think it wise to learn some of the old alphabets; not so Miss Thoyts, who considers it would be "so much waste of time," though admitting it would be valuable ground-work to commence with.
There are, as illustrations, a number of useful specimens of old handwritings though reduced on too small a scale, but it is scarcely credible that Miss Thoyts does not think it requisite in any case to give a transcript or translation, though obviously such for a beginner would be invaluable. Except in one instance the text does not even allude to the specimens. A pre-Norman deed appears amongst some Domesday excerpts as "extracts from Domesday," while a fac-simile of a "fine" cut in half has a very odd appearance and is only too likely to puzzle the reader.
The general antiquarian information is as a rule succinctly put though there are errors which should not appear in a handbook like this. Some of the lists given, such as the Norman Bishops will be appreciated, but in view of the title selected it is impossible to do other than criticize the book adversely, for certainly it is no guide to reading ancient manuscripts. Yet the book has very considerable merits, and if Miss Thoyts had but selected an appropriate title we should have had little to say against it, and a very great deal in its favour.
Genealogical Chart: showing the lineal descent of John Wilmer Green......from 88 families bearing different surnames, on a new plan invented and designed and now executed by Joseph J. Green, of Hampstead, Middlesex. 1892.
This chart is devised in the form of a circle of twenty eight inches in diameter and in arrangement is both novel and ingenious. J. W. Green, the "prepositus" whose pedigree is traced, is placed in the centre of this circle: his paternal forefathers occupy the upper half of the circle, and his maternal ancestors fill the lower portion. Surrounding the "prepositus' are concentric circles, in segments of which his ancestors are placed. The corners of this chart is filled with notes. Though it has the advantage that blank spaces for unknown ancestors are always ready for filling up, we do not think that this new plan is likely to be generally adopted. We should add that the whole appears to be lithographed from Mr. Green's handwriting.
