As a young double agent infiltrating the Soviet spy network in Nazi-occupied Paris, Andrew Hale finds himself caught up in a secret, even more ruthless war. Two decades later, in 1963, he will be forced to confront again the nightmarethat has haunted his adult life: a lethal unfinished operation code-named Declare. From the corridors of Whitehall to the Arabian desert, from post-war Berlin to the streets of Cold War Moscow, Hale's desperate quest draws him into international politics and gritty espionage tradecraft -- and inexorably drives Hale, the fiery and beautiful Communist agent Elena Teresa Ceniza-Bendiga, and Kim Philby, mysterious traitor to the British cause, to a deadly confrontation on the high glaciers of Mount Ararat, in the very shadow of the fabulous and perilous Ark.

I struck and struck again, And growing still in stature the grim shape Towered up between me and the stars, and still, For so it seemed, with purpose of its own And measured motion like a living thing, Strode after me.

82 페이지 - Lest, having Him, I must have naught beside) But, if one little casement parted wide, The gust of His approach would clash it to; Fear wist not to evade, as Love wist to pursue.
137 페이지 - There was a Door to which I found no Key: There was a Veil past which I could not see: Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE There seemed - and then no more of THEE and ME. XXXIII Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried, Asking, 'What Lamp had Destiny to guide Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?' And - 'A blind Understanding!

This is a tale of those old fears, even of those emptied hells, And none but you shall understand the true thing that it tells Of what colossal gods of shame could cow men and yet crash, Of what huge devils hid the stars, yet fell at a pistol flash.
