Enacted 22nd August, 1859, published the 24th following, came into operation on publication.

[P. E. WODEHOUSE, Governor.] WHEREAS it is expedient to remove doubts, and to establish

uniformity in respect to the mode of making appointments to Public Offices in this Colony: Be it, therefore, enacted by His Excellency the Governor of British Guiana, with the advice and consent of the Court of Policy thereof, as follows:

1. In any case in which, by any Law or Ordinance now in force in this Colony, the appointment to any public office is vested in the Governor thereof for the time being, such appointment shall be taken to be, and shall be made for and in the name of, and subject to the approval of, Her Majesty.

2. In case of the Governor, in the absence or incapacity of any person holding any public office, appointing any person to act in such office during such absence or incapacity such person so appointments to public offices. pointed shall during his tenure of the office, have and exercise all the powers, authorities, rights, and privileges, and perform all the duties

OF LAND IN THAT PART OF GEORGETOWN CALLED NORTH
CUMINGSBURG, EAST WARD, FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF A PUBLIC LUNATIC ASYLUM.

become quite insufficient for the requirements of the Colony, it was, on the Eleventh day of July, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-nine, resolved by His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable the Court of Policy of British Guiana, that a Public Lunatic Asylum should be established in that part of Georgetown called North Cumingsburg, East Ward, on the lots or parcels of land hereinafter more particularly described, the same being the most eligible site for that purpose: And whereas it is expedient that the said lots or parcels of land, with all the buildings and erections thereon, should be forthwith vested in Her Majesty for the public uses of the Colony, and that adequate compensation therefor should be made to the owners thereof and to all other parties beneficially interested therein : Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of British Guiana,

2. 3. ments shall be determined by the votes of the majority of the special jurors impannelled, and every such assessment shall be final; and all persons interested in the said lands, buildings, or erections, or their value, may appear before the said Police Magistrate and tender to him such evidence as they may desire in support of their alleged rights, and the said Police Magistrate shall receive any evidence on oath or affirmation so tendered, and may call for any further evidence that may appear to him to be desirable, and may in case of need enforce the attendance of any person required as a witness in manner provided by Ordinance No. 19 of 1856.

[Ord. 2 anno AN ORDINANCE TO ESTABLISH A COLONIAL POST OFFICE. 1860.]

Preamble.

Enacted 3rd January, 1860, published the 14th following, came into operation 2nd May, 1860.

[P. E. WODEHOUSE, Governor.] WHEREAS an Act was passed in the Session of Parliament held

in the twelfth and thirteenth years of the Reign of Her present
Majesty, intituled "An Act for enabling Colonial Legislatures to
" establish Inland Posts :" And whereas at the desire and with the
consent of Her Majesty's Government, the Governor and Court of
Policy, combined with the Financial Representatives of the Inhabi-
tants of the Colony, resolved and agreed, on the 13th day of May
last past, to take over and regulate, by local enactment, subject to
Her Majesty's approval, the branch of the Imperial Post Office
heretofore established in this Colony: Be it therefore enacted by
His Excellency the Governor of British Guiana, with the advice and
consent of the Court of Policy thereof, as follows:-
