So earthly pleasures fade away,
When Jesus is revealed.

4 Creatures no more divide my choice,
I bid them all depart;

His name, his love, his gracious voice,
Have fixed my roving heart.

5 But may I hope, that thou wilt own
A worthless worm like me?

Dear Lord! I would be thine alone,
And wholly live to thee.

HYMN 314, C. M.

The full Purpose.

my Lord's appointed ways,
My journey I'll pursue;

Hinder me not,-ye much-loved saints!
For I must go with you.

mf 2 Through floods and flames, if Jesus leads I'll follow where he goes;

[merged small][ocr errors]

Hinder me not!-shall be my cry,
Though earth and hell oppose.

3 Through duty, and through trials too,
I'll go at his command;

Hinder me not, for I am bound

To my Immanuel's land.

4 And, when my Saviour calls me home, Still this my cry shall be,

mf

Hinder me not,-come, welcome, death.
I'll gladly go with thee.

HYMN 315, 8s and 78.

Redeeming Love.

mf 1 COME, thou Fount of every blessing! Tune my heart to grateful lays;

mf

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.

2 Teach me some melodious measure,
Sung by raptured saints above;
Fill my soul with sacred pleasure,
While I sing redeeming love.

3 Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;

He to save my soul from danger,
Interposed his precious blood."
4 Oh! to grace how great a debtor,
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy grace, Lord! like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee.
5 Prone to wander,-Lord! I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, Oh! take and seal it,→
Seal it from thy courts above.

HYMN 316, C. M.

Joy over the Penitent.

H! how divine, how sweet the joy,
When but one sinner turns,

And, with an humble, broken heart.
His sin and error mourns!

2 Pleased with the news, the saints below,
In songs, their tongues employ;
Beyond the skies the tidings go,
And heaven is filled with joy.

3 Well-pleased, the Father sees, and hears
The conscious sinner's moan;
Jesus receives him in his arms,

And claims him for his own.

mf 4 Nor angels can their joys contain,
But kindle with new fire:
"The sinner lost is found!"-they sing
And strike the sounding lyre.

HYMN 317, L. M.

Joy in Heaven for a repenting Sinner.
HO can describe the joys that rise,
Through all the courts of Paradise
To see a prodigal return,-

To see an heir of glory born?

2 With joy the Father doth approve
The fruit of his eternal love;

The Son with joy looks down, and sees
The purchase of his agonies.

3 The Spirit takes delight to view
The holy soul he formed anew,

The growing empire of their King.

HYMN 318, S. M.

The Song of the Saved on Earth.

1 FROM Egypt's bondage come,

Where death and darkness reign,
We seek a new, a better home,
Where we our rest shall gain.

mf 2 To Canaan's sacred bound,

<

We haste with songs of joy,
Where peace and liberty are found,
And sweets that never cloy.

3 There sin and sorrow cease,
And every conflict 's o'er;

There we shall dwell in endless peace,
Nor thirst nor hunger more.

mf 4 There, in celestial strains,

Enraptured myriads sing;

And love in every bosom reigns,-
For God himself is king.

mf 5 We hope to join the throng,

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

And soon their pleasures share,—
To sing the everlasting song,

With all the ransomed there.

6 How sweet the prospect is!

It cheers the pilgrim's breast;

We're journeying, through the wilderness,
To our eternal rest.

HYMN 319, L. M.

A Youth, seeking heavenly Wisdom.

ASK not wealth, nor pomp, nor power,
Nor fleeting pleasures of an hour:

My soul aspires to nobler things
Than all the pride and state of kings.

2 One thing I ask ;-Lord! wilt thou hear
And grant my soul a gift so dear?-
Wisdom, descending from above,
The sweetest token of thy love:-
3 Wisdom, betimes to know the Lord,
To fear his name, and keep his word;

VIV

To lead my feet in paths of truth,

And guide and guard my wandering youth.
4 Then, shouldst thou grant a length of days,
My life shall still proclaim thy praise;
Or early death my soul convey
To realms of everlasting day.

COM

HYMN 320, H. M.

Renouncing the World.

OME, my fond fluttering heart!
Come, struggle to be free;
Thou and the world must part,
However hard it be:

My trembling spirit owns it just,
But cleaves yet closer to the dust.
2 Ye tempting sweets! forbear;
Ye dearest idols! fall;

My love ye must not share,
Jesus shall have it all:

'T is bitter pain,—'t is cruel smart,—
But, ah! thou must consent, my heart!

3 Ye fair enchanting throng!

Ye golden dreams! farewell!
Earth has prevailed too long,

And now I break the spell:
Farewell, ye joys of early years !-
Jesus! forgive these parting tears.

mp 4 In Gilead there is balm,

A kind Physician there,
My fevered mind to calm,
And bid me not despair:

Aid me, dear Saviour! set me free;
My all I would resign to thee.

5 Oh! may I feel thy worth,
And let no idol dare,—

No vanity of earth,

With thee, my Lord! compare.
Now bid all worldly joys depart,
And reign supremely in my heart.

CHRISTIAN.

HYMN 321, 78.
Rejoicing in Jesus.

NOW begin the heavenly theme
Sing aloud in Jesus' name;
Ye, who his salvation prove,
Triumph in redeeming love.

2 Ye, who see the Father's grace
Beaming in the Saviour's face,
As to Canaan on ye move,
Praise, and bless redeeming love.

3 Mourning souls! dry up your tears
Banish all your sinful fears;

See your guilt and curse remove,—
Canceled by redeeming love.

4 Welcome all, by sin oppressed,-
Welcome to his sacred rest!
Nothing brought him from above,→
Nothing but redeeming love.

5 Hither, then, your music bring;
Strike aloud each joyful string;
Mortals! join the hosts above,―
Join to praise redeeming love.
6 When his Spirit leads us home,
When we to his glory come,
We shall all the fullness prove
Of the Lord's redeeming love.

322

HYMN 322, 8s and 7s.

Joyful Hope.

mf 1 KNOW, my soul! thy full salvation;

Rise o'er sin, and fear and care,

Joy to find, in every station,
Something still to do or bear:

Think, what Spirit dwells within thee;
Think, what Father's smiles are thine
Think, what Jesus did to win thee ;-
Child of heaven! canst thou repine?
