HYMN 68.

(L. M. ST. ANDREW'S.)
For thankfulness to God.

1 ALMIGHTY King! whose wondrous hand
Supports the weight of sea and land:
Whose grace is such a boundless store,
No heart shall break that sighs for more:
2 Thy providence supplies our food;
And 'tis thy blessing makes it good;
Our souls are nourish'd by thy word;-
Let soul and body praise the Lord!
3 Our streams of outward comfort came
From Him who built this earthly frame
Whate'er we want his bounty gives,
By whom the soul for ever lives.
4. Either his arm preserves from pains,
Or underneath the load sustains;
From Satan's malice shields our breast,
Or over-rules it for the best.

5 Forgive the songs that fall so low
Beneath the gratitude we owe:
Accept our praise, however poor;
And give us grace to praise Thee more.
HYMN 69.

(C. M. HARLEY.)

For faith in the promise of God,

1 WHEN floods of grief assault the mind,
And o'er the conscience roll,

Where shall the mourner comfort find,
To soothe his troubled soul?

2 Lord, Thou hast said, "seek ye my face:" And shall we seek in vain?

And will the ear of sovereign grace
Be deaf when we complain

3 Ah! no the ear of sovereign grace
Attends the mourner's prayer:
The mourner always finds a place
To breathe his sorrows there.

4 Thy Spirit heals the troubled soul,
With guilty fears oppress'd;
Thy Spirit makes the wounded whole,
And gives the weary rest.

5 Ten thousand sinners see thy face,
Who once were vile as we:
Then why should we distrust thy grace,
Since grace has made them free?

6 for a heart to trust the Lord,
Who bids our sorrows cease!
For faith to claim that gracious word,
"Sinner! depart in peace!"

HYMN 70.

(L. M. ISLINGTON.)

Declension from God lamented.

1 How blest the time when Jesus shone
In all his power, and all his grace!
But ah! those peaceful hours are gone;
And now He veils his heavenly face.
2 We hate the sins that grieved the Lord;
And drove thy Spirit from our breast;
Yet bless Thee for the gracious word,
That in thy love Thou still wilt rest.*
Zeph. iii. 17.

3 Return, God! our Sun and Shield!
Again we'll urge the battle on,
Renew the fight, regain the field,
Looking to Thee, and Thee alone.
4 Unveil again thy heavenly face;
Nor let thy truth and mercy fail:
Kept by thy power and sovereign grace,
Our mightiest foes shall not prevail.
HYMN 71.

(L. M. PANCRAS.)

For the continued influences of the Spirit.

1 STAY, Thou insulted Spirit! stay,
Though we have done Thee such despite ;
Nor yet withdraw thy heavenly sway,
Nor take thine everlasting flight.

2 Though we have steel'd our stubborn heart,
And stll suppress'd each guilty fear,
And vex'd and urged Thee to depart,
From day to day, and year to year:
3 Yea, though we've most unfaithful been,
Of all who e'er thy grace received;
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,
Ten thousand times thy goodnes grieved;
4 Yet oh! the chief of sinners spare,
In honour of our great High-Priest:
Nor in thy righteous anger, swear,
To exclude us from thy heavenly rest.
5 From Satan's snares our souls release;
Uphold us by thy sovereign hand;
Restore us to the way of peace,
And bring us safe to Canaan's land.

HYMN 72.

(C. M. DUBLIN.)

For growth in grace.

1 TRY us, O God! and search the ground
Of every sinful heart:
Whate'er of sin in us is found,
Oh! bid it all depart.

2 When to the right or left we stray,
Pity thy helpless sheep;

Bring back our feet into the way,
And there thy wanderers keep.

3 Help us to help each other, Lord!
Each other's burden bear;
Let each his friendly aid afford
To soothe his brother's care.

4 Help us to build each other up;
Help us ourselves to prove;

Increase our faith, confirm our hope,
And perfect us in love.

5 Complete at length thy work of grace, And take us to thy rest,

Among thy saints, who see thy face,
To be for ever blest.

HYMN 73.

(C. M. LIVERPOOL.)

For the love and fear of God.

1 ETERNAL God! we look to Thee;
To Thee for help we fly :

Thine eye alone our wants can see,
Thine arm alone supply.

2 Lord! let thy fear within us dwell;
Thy love our footsteps guide;
That love will all vain love expel;
That fear all fear beside.

3 Alas! by passion's force subdued,
Too oft with stubborn will,
We blindly shun the latent good,
And choose the specious ill.

Not what we wish, but what we want,
Oh! let thy grace supply:
The good, unask'd, in mercy grant;
The ill, though ask'd, deny.

HYMN 74.

(с. м. BIRMINGHAM.)

For a right improvement of the dispensations of Providence. 1 THOU boundless Source of every good! Our best desires fulfil;

And help us to adore thy grace,
And mark thy sovereign will.

2 In all thy mercies

may our souls

Thy bounteous goodness see;
Nor let the gifts thy grace imparts.
Estrange our hearts from Thee.

3 Teach us, in times of deep distress,
To own thy hand, O God!
And in submissive silence hear
The lessons of thy rod.

4 In every changing scene of life,
Whate'er that scene may be,

Give us a meek and humble mind;
A mind at peace with Thee.
