ART. XII.-CHARACTER AND WRITINGS OF MADAME DE STAËL.

Notice sur le Caractère et les Ecrits de Madame De Staëls Par Madame Necker de Saussure. A Londres, chez Treuttel et Würtz, Libraires, 1820.

Sketch of the Life, Churacter, and Writings, of Baroness De Staël Holstein. By Madam Necker de Saussure.

WE cannot have lived thus long in the world without having learned to receive the testimonies of the biographer with great caution; but the eulogium by one enthusiast of another leaves our credulity entirely unfettered. We are always ready, however, to compromise with such writers by agreeing to allow for their devotedness upon terms of being permitted to distrust their correctness. The portrait which the above writer has given to the world of her friend is less a likeness of the person intended to be represented than an example of the imbecility of idolatrous admiration. A narrative of the leading events of the life of Madame de Staël, her domestic intercourse, and familiar correspondence, could not fail to be entertaining, with whatever partiality they might be exhibited; but the letters of this extraordinary woman, by a destiny rather new in the case of a female author, appear not to have been preserved. They do not seem indeed, even in the opinion of Madame Necker herself, to have been upon a par with her other compositions.
