Take ye good heed unto yourselves;
For ye saw no manner of similitude
On the day that the Lord spake unto you
In Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a
graven image,

The similitude of any figure.

Rom. i. 22; Deut. iv. 15.

240. Worship neither Saints nor Angels.

AND when I had heard and seen,

I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel

Which had shewed me these things.

Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: For I am thy fellow-servant,

And of thy brethren the prophets,

And of them which keep the sayings of this book:

Worship God.-Rev. xxii. 8.

241.

THE THIRD COMMANDMENT.

Swear not at all.

(S.M.)

O NEVER, never swear,

Nor use a wicked word;
Remember God is everywhere,
And every oath is heard.

O why should words profane
Defile the tongue God gave?

How can you take his name in vain,
Who died your souls to save!

At church you sing and pray,
Yet through the week you swear;
The selfsame tongue will curse at play,
Then speak to God in prayer.

It ought not to be so :

O, watch your hearts within!
For all that's more than Yes, or No,
Is sure to come of sin.

242. Keep thy Tongue from evil.

I SAY unto you, Swear not at all;

But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay :

For whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Above all things, my brethren, swear not; Neither by heaven, neither by the earth, Neither by any other oath :

But let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; Lest ye fall into condemnation.

Matt. v. 34; James v. 12.

THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT.

243. How to keep the Sabbath.

IF thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath,

From doing thy pleasure on my holy day;
And call the Sabbath a delight,

The holy of the Lord, honourable;
And shalt honour Him,

Not doing thine own ways,

Nor finding thine own pleasure,
Nor speaking thine own words:

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord;
For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Isa. lviii. 13..

244. Bear no Burdens on Sunday.

THUS saith the Lord; Take heed to yourselves,

And bear no burden on the Sabbath-day,
Nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;
Neither carry forth a burden

Out of your houses on the Sabbath-day,
Neither do ye any work,

But hallow ye the Sabbath-day,

As I commanded your fathers.

[blocks in formation]

Jer. xvii. 21.

(7's.)

SUNDAY is the holy day,

Which belongs to God alone;
Let us neither work nor play,
For the hours are not our own.
Sunday unto us is given
For a day of godly rest,

Such as we shall have in heaven,
When we are for ever blest.
In the six appointed days,

Food and raiment we must earn;
We may have our healthful play,
And our needful wisdom learn.
Sunday we must never use

For the things which will not last;
'Tis for us to-day to choose
What will stand when life is past.

246.

The First Sabbath.

THUS the heavens and the earth were

finished,

And all the host of them.

And on the seventh day

God ended his work which He had made; And He rested on the seventh day

From all his work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it;

Because that in it He had rested

From all his work which God created and made.-Gen. ii. 1.

247.

The Preparation.

THE Sunday is at hand,

The hours of work are done;
To-morrow is God's holy rest,
And soon 'twill be begun.

(s. M.)

"Tis time for me to close
The business of the week;

To cease from earthly thoughts and play,
And heavenly blessings seek.

I'll finish ere I sleep,

All that I have to do;

So when I wake my mind may have
Only God's rest in view.

When death shall be at hand,
And days and weeks are o'er,
May I be ready to begin

A Sabbath evermore.

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT.

248. Children, Obey your Parents. (7's.)

CHILDREN, Would you know the way,
Happy through your lives to be;
Always honour and obey,

Both your parents readily.

Think not 'tis enough to love,
Honour meaneth something more;
Their commands are far above
What you may have wished before.

What they bid you, always do;
Leave undone what they forbid ;
Them revere, to them be true,
Nothing should from them be hid.
