Even when youth has passed away,
Give them honour, watch their will;
Be their comfort, help, and stay,
For they are your parents still.

249. God's Words to Children.

CHILDREN, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Honour thy father and thy mother;

Which is the first commandment with promise;

That it may be well with thee,

And thou mayest live long on the earth.
Children, obey your parents in all things.
Cursed be he that setteth light by his father
or his mother!

And all the people shall say, Amen!
The eye that mocketh at his father,
And despiseth to obey his mother,
The ravens of the valley shall pick it out,
And the young eagles shall eat it!
-Eph. vi. 1; Col. iii. 20; Deut. xxvii. 16 ;
Prov. xxx. 17.

250.

THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT.

Brotherly Kindness.

O BLESSED Jesus, make me kind,
And dwell within my heart;

That bitterness and hastiness
In me may have no part.

(C.M.)

Whene'er in angry rage I lift
My hand to strike another,
I'm doing in a less degree

Cain's deed towards his brother!

The beasts, whose spirits die, will fight
For safety, food, or life;
The savages, who know not God,
Delight in blood and strife.

The quarrelsome and passionate,

How can they dwell above,

Where none are found but those whose hearts God fills, and God is love!

251. How to treat our Enemies.

LOVE your enemies,

Bless them that curse you,

Do good to them that hate you,

And pray for them which despitefully use

you,

And persecute you;

That ye may be the children of your Father Which is in heaven:

For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good,

And sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if

ye love them which love you, What reward have ye ?

Do not even the publicans the same?

Matt. v. 44.

252. Be ye kind one to another.
SAVIOUR, teach me how to live,
Ever ready to forgive:

Teach me, teach me how to pray,
For offenders day by day!

;

Lord, thy grace to me impart,
Soften my revengeful heart :
Let me not be pleased to see
Grief on those who've injured me.
If my faults were strictly tried,
By thy wrath I must have died
Since thy mercy bears me long,
I'll forgive who do me wrong.
If unkindness on me fall,
Let me freely pardon all;
Kindle in me mercy's fire,
Let my patience never tire !

THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT.

(7's.)

253. Remove thy Foot from Evil. (L.M.)
O THAT the young would watch their heart,
And guard from sinful looks their eyes;
From words impure would alway start,
And check all wanton thoughts that rise.
'Tis not enough from vice to flee,
The thought of wickedness is sin :
Each secret wish the Lord can see,
And whether you resist within.

The dress that's meant to catch the eye,
The giddy manner, light or bold,—
Unhallowed looks, or loose reply,-
A heart prepared for sin unfold.

O shun temptation, and beware ;

Turn from the place where sinners meet;
Flee to your God in humble prayer,
And he will all your foes defeat.

254.

Flee from Temptation.

UNDERSTANDING shall keep thee, to deliver thee

From the stranger which flattereth with her words;

Which forsaketh the guide of her youth,
And forgetteth the covenant of her God.
For her house inclineth unto death,
And her paths unto the dead.

None that go unto her return again,
Neither take they hold of the paths of life.

Behold, this was the inquity of Sodom, Pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness

Was in her and in her daughters,

Neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me :

Therefore I took them away as I saw good.

Prov. ii. 11-19; Ezek. xvi. 49.

255.

Modest Apparel.

THE Woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man,

Neither shall a man put on a woman's gar

ment:

For all that do so

Are abomination unto the Lord.

256.

Deut. xxii. 5.

Resist the Devil.

DEARLY beloved,

I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims,
Abstain from fleshly lusts

Which war against the soul.

Thou therefore, my son, be strong In the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Flee also youthful lusts:

But follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace,

With them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.-1 Pet. ii. 11; 2 Tim. ii. 1-22.

THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT.

257. Let him that stole steal no more. (7's.)
IF I take what is not mine,
Breaking God's most holy law,
None may know of my design,-
But there was an eye that saw !
