THE esteem in which the character and services of General Havelock continue to be held by his fellow-countrymen has been manifested by the exhaustion of the former editions of his Memoirs, and it has appeared advisable to issue another and a popular edition, with the view of placing them within the reach of a larger number of the public. The compiler has not felt it necessary to yield to the advice of those who consider that the disparaging remarks which have recently been made on his professional and his religious character should be noticed in the next edition of his Life. The simple, unvarnished narrative of his deeds during the appalling difficulties of the Mutiny, and the exposition of his familiar correspondence, will be found to furnish the best vindication of his character. Whatever feelings may have been excited under the idea that his merits have been overestimated by his country, must be left to the ameliorating influence of public opinion.
