"effectual Provision for the Establishment of Asylums for the c. 33. 5 Lunatic Poor and for the Custody of Insane Persons charged with "Offences in Ireland ;" and the said Act was amended by the follow ing Acts; that is to say, an Act of the Session holden in the Sixth 6 G. 4. c. 54. Year of His Majesty King George the Fourth, Chapter Fifty-four; c. 107. c. 115. an Act of the Session holden in the Seventh Year of His Majesty 7 G. 4. c. 14. 10 King George the Fourth, Chapter Fourteen; an Act of the Session 11 G. 4. and holden in the Eleventh Year of His Majesty King George the Fourth, 1 W. 4. c. 22. Chapter Twenty-two; an Act of the Session holden in the Eighth 8 & 9 Vict. and Ninth Years of Her Majesty, Chapter One hundred and seven ; an Act of the Session holden in the Ninth and Tenth Years of Her 9 & 10 Vict. 15 Majesty, Chapter One hundred and fifteen; and an Act of the Session 18 & 19 Vict. holden in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Years of Her Majesty, c. 109. Chapter One hundred and nine: And whereas since the passing of the said first-recited Act, the successive Lords Lieutenant of Ireland have appointed the Officers of the said Asylums; but Doubts 20 have arisen respecting the Authority to make such Appointments, The Lord Lieutenant and Council ber and which it is expedient to remove: Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the Authority of the same, as follows: I. All Appointments of Officers for Asylums for the Lunatic Poor 5 in Ireland, and all Salaries for such Officers fixed or granted, and all Matters and Things heretofore done by the Lord Lieutenant or by the Lord Lieutenant and Council of Ireland with respect to such Appointments, shall be and remain good and valid, and be effectual for all Purposes whatever. 10 II. The Lord Lieutenant and Council shall in the Case of every Asylum for the Lunatic Poor established or to be hereafter established shall deter- in Ireland fix and determine the Number and Description of Officers mine Num- for every such Asylum, the Duties of such Officers, and the Salaries Description (if any) to be paid to them respectively; and the Lord Lieutenant 15 shall appoint such Officers, and may remove any such Officer, and Asylums, and shall have Power, upon every Vacancy by Death, Removal, ResignaSalaries, and tion, or otherwise, in any such Office, from Time to Time to appoint some other Person to such Office, subject to the Conditions and remove such Restrictions affecting the original Appointment to such Office. of Officers for Lunatic fix their appoint and Officers. Short Title of Act. Interpretation of Terms. III. In citing this Act for any Purpose whatever it shall be sufficient to use the Expression "Lunatic Asylums, Ireland, Act, 1856." 99 20 IV. In the Interpretation of this Act, save where there is anything in the Subject or Context repugnant to such Construction, the Words 25 "Lord Lieutenant" shall include any other Chief Governor or Governors of Ireland; the Words "Lord Lieutenant and Council shall mean the Lord Lieutenant or other Chief Governor or Governors of Ireland, by and with the Advice of Her Majesty's Privy Council in Ireland; and the Word "Officer" shall mean and include Governors, 30 Managers, Chaplains, Physicians, Surgeons, Apothecaries, Keepers, and other Officers.
