HYMNS.

Advent.

HYMN 1.

THE Advent of our GOD

Our pray'rs must now employ, And we must meet Him on His road With hymns of holy joy.

The everlasting SON

Incarnate we shall see :

He hath a servant's form put on,
To make His people free.

As Judge, in clouds of light He will come down again, And all His scatter'd saints unite With Him in Heav'n to reign.

Before that dreadful Day May all our sin be gone; May the old man be put away, And the new man put on!

B

Ye servants of the LORD, Each in his office wait, Observant of His heavenly word And watchful at His gate.

Let all your lamps be bright, Steady the wavering flame : Gird up your loins, as in His sight, For awful is His Name.

Watch! 'tis your LORD's command, And while we speak He's near; Mark the first signal of His Hand, And ready all appear.

O happy servant he

In such attention found!

He shall his LORD with rapture see,
And be with honour crown'd.

Christ shall the banquet spread With His own royal Hand, And raise that faithful servant's head, Among His angel-band.

TO GOD the FATHER, SON,
And SPIRIT, glory be;

As was, and is, and shall be so
To all eternity.

HYMN 2.

Lo! He comes, with clouds descending,
Once for favor'd sinners slain;
Thousand thousand Saints attending

Swell the triumph of His train :
Alleluia !

Alleluia! Amen.

Ev'ry eye shall now behold Him
Rob'd in dreadful majesty ;

They who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierc'd, and nail'd Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the dread Messiah see.

Ev'ry island, sea, and mountain, Heav'n and earth, shall flee away; All who hate Him, must, confounded, Hear the Trump proclaim the Day: Come to Judgment,

Come to Judgment, come away!

Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear!
All His Saints, by men rejected,
Rise to meet Him in the air:
Alleluia !

Angels, Martyrs, all are there!

Yea, Amen let all adore Thee

High on Thine eternal Throne ; Saviour! take the power and glory, Make Thy righteous sentence known! Oh, come quickly,

Claim the kingdoms for Thine own!

HYMN 3.

IN the sun, the moon, the stars, Signs and wonders shall there be; Earth shall quake with inward wars, Nations with perplexity.

Soon shall ocean's mighty deep,
Toss'd with stronger tempests rise,
Wilder storms the mountains sweep,
Louder thunders wake the skies.

Dread alarms shall shake the proud,
Pale amazement, restless fear;
Then amid the glory-cloud

Shall the Son of man appear.

But, while from that awful Face
Heaven shall fade, and earth shall fly,
Fear not ye, His chosen race;
Your redemption draweth nigh.

Earth is past away, and gone
All her glories, every one;
All her pomp is broken down :
GOD is reigning-GOD alone!

All her high ones lowly lie,
All her mirth hath passed by,
All her merry-hearted sigh:
GOD is reigning-GOD on high!

No more sorrow, no more night;
Perfect joy, and purest light;
With His spotless saints and bright
GOD is reigning in the height!

Blessing, praise, and glory bring;
Offer every holy thing:
Everlasting praises sing!

GOD is reigning, GOD is King!

HYMN 4.

GREAT GOD! what do I see and hear?
The end of things created!
The Judge of mankind doth appear,
On clouds of glory seated!

The trumpet sounds! the graves restore
The dead that they contain'd before!
Prepare, my soul, to meet Him.
