HYMNS. Advent. HYMN 1. THE Advent of our GOD Our pray'rs must now employ, And we must meet Him on His road With hymns of holy joy. The everlasting SON Incarnate we shall see : He hath a servant's form put on, As Judge, in clouds of light He will come down again, And all His scatter'd saints unite With Him in Heav'n to reign. Before that dreadful Day May all our sin be gone; May the old man be put away, And the new man put on! B Ye servants of the LORD, Each in his office wait, Observant of His heavenly word And watchful at His gate. Let all your lamps be bright, Steady the wavering flame : Gird up your loins, as in His sight, For awful is His Name. Watch! 'tis your LORD's command, And while we speak He's near; Mark the first signal of His Hand, And ready all appear. O happy servant he In such attention found! He shall his LORD with rapture see, Christ shall the banquet spread With His own royal Hand, And raise that faithful servant's head, Among His angel-band. TO GOD the FATHER, SON, As was, and is, and shall be so HYMN 2. Lo! He comes, with clouds descending, Swell the triumph of His train : Alleluia! Amen. Ev'ry eye shall now behold Him They who set at nought and sold Him, Shall the dread Messiah see. Ev'ry island, sea, and mountain, Heav'n and earth, shall flee away; All who hate Him, must, confounded, Hear the Trump proclaim the Day: Come to Judgment, Come to Judgment, come away! Now redemption, long expected, Angels, Martyrs, all are there! Yea, Amen let all adore Thee High on Thine eternal Throne ; Saviour! take the power and glory, Make Thy righteous sentence known! Oh, come quickly, Claim the kingdoms for Thine own! HYMN 3. IN the sun, the moon, the stars, Signs and wonders shall there be; Earth shall quake with inward wars, Nations with perplexity. Soon shall ocean's mighty deep, Dread alarms shall shake the proud, Shall the Son of man appear. But, while from that awful Face Earth is past away, and gone All her high ones lowly lie, No more sorrow, no more night; Blessing, praise, and glory bring; GOD is reigning, GOD is King! HYMN 4. GREAT GOD! what do I see and hear? The trumpet sounds! the graves restore |
