the ear is formed to all the nature of the modification of the air; the lungs to all the nature of its pressure; as also the compass of the body, which is kept together in its form by the circumpressure of the air; the eye is formed to all the nature of ether and light; the tongue to the sense of the solvent and fluent parts in liquids, and together with the lungs, the windpipe, the larynx, the glottis, the fauces, and the lips, to the ability of suitably modifying the air, whence come articulate sounds, or voices, and harmonic sounds; the nostrils are formed to the sense of the fluent parts in the atmos phere; the touch, which encompasses the whole body, to the sense of the changes of state in the air, namely, to the sense of its cold and heat, and also to the sense of liquids, and to the sense of what is heavy. The interior viscera, to which the aerial atmosphere cannot enter, are kept together in connexion and form by a more subtle air, which is called ether; not to mention, that all the arcana of interior nature are inscribed on and applied to it, [the external man] as all the arcana of mechanics, all of physics, all of chymics, all of optics. From these things it may be manifest, that universal nature is conducive to form the external of man; thence it is that the ancients called man a microcosm. As then the external man is formed to the image of all things of the world, so is the internal man formed to the image of all things of heaven, that is, to the image of things celestial and spiritual, which proceed from the Lord, from which and in which is heaven. The celestial things therein are all the things of love to the Lord and of charity towards the neighbor, and the spiritual things therein are all the things of faith; which things are in themselves so great and of such a quality, that the tongue cannot express one thousandth thousandth part of them. That the internal man is formed to the image of all those things, is conspicuously exemplified in the angels, who, when they appear before the internal sight, as they have appeared before mine, affect the inmosts, by their presence alone; for love to the Lord and charity towards the neighbor flow forth from them and penetrate, and the things which are thence, namely, the things of faith, shine forth from them and affect; thence it has been made manifest, and from other confirming proofs, that the internal man, because he was created to be an angel, is a heaven in the least form. From these things it may now appear evident, that in man the spiritual world is conjoined with the natural world, consequently that with him the spiritual world flows in into the natural world, so that he may apperceive it to the life, if he only attends. Hence also it is evident what is the intercourse of the soul with the body, namely, that properly it is the communication of the spiritual things, which are of heaven, with the natural things which are of the world, and that the communication is effected by influx, and is according to conjunction. This communication, which is effected

by influx according to conjunction, is at this day unknown, by reason that all things and each are attributed to nature, and nothing is known concerning what is spiritual, which at this day is so remote, that, when it is thought of, it appears as nothing.

6058. But the nature of influx is such, that from the Lord's Divine, there is an influx into every angel, into every spirit, and into every man, and that thus the Lord rules every one, not only in the universal, but also in things most individual, and this immediately from Himself, and likewise mediately through the spiritual world. That it may be known that there is such influx, several things have been premised concerning the correspondence of the parts of man with the grand man, that is, with heaven, and at the same time concerning the representation of spiritual things in natural; which are treated of at the close of the chapters xxiii. to xliii. ; and next concerning the angels and spirits with man, at the close of chapters xliv. and xlv. It follows now that influx and the intercourse of the soul and body should be specifically treated of. But these subjects ought to be illustrated by experiences, otherwise things so unknown, and rendered obscure by hypotheses, cannot be brought forth into the light; the illustrative experiences will be presented at the close of some of the following chapters: let what has been now said serve as an introduction.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVENTH,

1. And Joseph came, and told Pharaoh, and said my father and my brethren, and their flocks and their herds, and all that they have, are come from the land of Canaan, and lo, they are in the land of Goshen.

2. And from part of his brethren he took five men, and set them before Pharaoh.

3. And Pharaoh said to his brethren, what are your works? And they said to Pharaoh, a shepherd of a flock are thy servants, both we and also our fathers.

4. And they said unto Pharaoh, to sojourn in the land we are come, because there is no pasture for the flock which belongeth to thy servants, because the famine is grievous in the land of Canaan, and now let thy servants dwell I pray in the land of Goshen.

5. And Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying, thy father and thy brethren are come to thee.

6. The land of Egypt it is before thee, in the best of the land cause thy father and thy brethren to dwell, let them dwell in the land of Goshen and if thou knowest and there be in them men of stoutness, thou shalt set them rulers of cattle over what I have.

7. And Joseph caused Jacob his father to come, and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8. And Pharaoh said to Jacob, how many are the days of the of thy life?

9. And Jacob said to Pharaoh, the days of the years of my sojournings are thirty and a hundred years: little and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.

10. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

11. And Joseph caused his father and his brethren to dwell, and gave them possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Ramesis, as Pharaoh commanded.

12. And Joseph sustained his father and his brethren, and the whole house of his father with bread to the mouth of an infant.

13. And there was no bread in all the land, because the famine was exceedingly grievous, and the land of Egypt labored and the land of Canaan from before the famine.

14. And Joseph collected all the silver found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in the provision which they bought, and Joseph caused the silver to come to the house of Pharaoh.

15. And the silver was consumed out of the land of Egypt, and out of the land of Canaan, and all Egypt came to Joseph, saying, give us bread, and why shall we die near thee, because silver faileth.

16. And Joseph said, give your cattle, and I will give to you in your cattle, if silver hath failed.

17. And they caused their cattle to come to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, and for the cattle of the flock, and for the cattle of the herd, and for the asses, and provided them with bread for all their cattle in this year.

18. And this year was ended, and they came to him in another year, and said to him we will not conceal from the lord, that indeed the silver is consumed, and the cattle of the beast, to the lord, there is not left before the lord, except our body and our ground.

19. Wherefore shall we die to thine eyes, both we and also our ground, buy us and our ground for bread, and we will live and our ground servants to Pharaoh, and give thou seed, and let us live and not die, and the ground may not be wasted.

20. And Joseph bought all the ground of Egypt for Pharaoh, because the Egyptians sold every one his field, inasmuch as the famine prevailed over them; and the land was for Pharaoh.

21. And he translated that people to the cities from the end of the border of Egypt, and to the end thereof.

22. Only the ground of the priests did he not buy, because the portion was appointed to the priests by Pharaoh, and they did eat their appointed portion, which Pharaoh had given them, therefore they did not sell their ground.

23. And Joseph said to the people, behold I have bought you. to-day and your ground for Pharaoh, lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the ground.

24. And it shall be, in the produce, and ye shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be for you for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them in your houses, and for food for your infants.

25. And they said, thou hast made us alive, let us find grace in the eyes of the lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.

26. And Joseph appointed it for a statute even to this day over the ground of Egypt, that a fifth should be for Pharaoh; only the ground of the priests theirs alone was not for Pharaoh.

27. And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they had possession therein, and made themselves fruitful and multiplied exceedingly.

28. And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of Jacob the years of his life were seven years, and forty and a hundred years.

29. And the days of Israel drew near to die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, if I pray I have found grace in thine eyes, place I pray thy hand under my thigh, and do with me mercy and truth, do not I pray bury me in Egypt.

30. And I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and shalt bury me in their sepulchre; and he said, I will do according to thy word.

31. And he said, swear to me, and he sware to him; and Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

THE CONTENTS.

6059. After spiritual good from the natural, which is Israel, has been conjoined with the internal celestial, which is Joseph, as treated of in the foregoing chapter, it is treated in this chapter, in the internal sense, concerning the insinuation of the truths of the church, which are in the natural, into the scientific. The truths of the church, which are in the natural, are the sons of Jacob; general truth itself therein is Jacob: the scientific, into which those truths are insinuated, is Pharaoh.

6060. It is afterwards treated concerning scientifics, how they were reduced into order by the internal celestial, which is Joseph,

namely, that scientific truths first, next the truths of good and goods of truth, at length all the natural as to scientifics, were reduced under their general [principle.]

6061. Lastly it is treated concerning the regeneration of spiritual good from the natural, which is Israel.

THE INTERNAL SENSE.

6062. Verse 1. And Joseph came, and told Pharaoh, and said, my father and my brethren, and their flocks and their herds, and all that they have, are come from the land of Canaan, and lo, they are in the land of Goshen. And Joseph came, and told Pharaoh, and said, signifies the presence of the internal celestial in the natural where scientifics are, and influx and perception thence: my father and my brethren, signifies spiritual good in the natural, and the truths of the church there: their flocks and their herds, signifies interior and exterior goods of truth and all that they have, signifies whatever is thence: are come from the land of Canaan, signifies that they are from the church and lo, they are in the land of Goshen, signifies that they are in the midst of the natural where the scientifics

are.

6063. "And Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said "— that it signifies the presence of the internal celestial, in the natural where scientifics are, and influx thence, and perception, appears from the signification of coming to any one, as being presence, n. 5934; and from the representation of Joseph, as being the internal celestial, n. 5869, 5877; and from the signification of telling, as denoting influx, n. 5966; and from the representation of Pharaoh, as being the natural, and thence the scientific in general, n. 5799, 6015; and from the signification of saying, in the historicals of the Word, as being perception, ». 1791, 1815, 1819, 1822, 1898, 1919, 2080, 2619, 2862, 3509, 5687; hence it is evident, that by Joseph came, and told Pharaoh, and said, is signified the presence of the internal celestial in the natural where scientifics are, and thence influx and perception. Concerning the influx of the internal into the natural or external, and concerning the perception of this latter, much has been said above; and it has been shown that the natural subsists and lives by virtue of influx from the internal, that is, through the internal from the Lord.
