GENESIS.

CHAPTER FORTY-FOURTH.

1. AND he commanded him who was over his house, saying, fill the wallets of the men with food, as much as they can bear, and place every one's silver in the mouth of his wallet.

2. And my cup, the cup of silver, place in the mouth of the wallet of the youngest, and the silver of his corn; and he did according to the word of Joseph which he spake.

3. The morning was light, and the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4. They went forth from the city, not being got far off, and Joseph said to him who was over his house, arise, pursue after the men, and overtake them, and say to them, wherefore do ye recompense evil for good?

5. Is it not this wherein my lord drinketh, and divining he divineth in this? Ye have ill done what ye have done.

6. And he overtook them, and spake to them those words. 7. And they said to him, wherefore doth my lord speak according to these words? Be it far from thy servants to do according to this word.

8. Lo, the silver which we found in the mouth of our wallets we brought back to thee from the land of Canaan, and how shall we steal out of the house of thy lord silver or gold.

9. [He] with whom it is found of thy servants, let him die, and also we will be to my lord for servants.

10. And he said, also now according to your words, so be it, [he] with whom it is found shall be my servant, and ye shall be guiltless.

[blocks in formation]

11. And they hastened, and caused to descend every one his wallet to the earth, and they opened every one his wallet.

12. And he searched, beginning in the eldest, and leaving off in the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's wallet.

13. And they rended their garments, and every one laid his load upon his ass, and they returned to the city.

14. And Judah entered and his brethren the house of Joseph, and he yet he was there, and they fell before him to the earth.

15. And Joseph said to them, what deed is this which ye have done? Did not ye know that a man, who is as I, by divining divineth?

16. And Judah said, what shall we say to my lord, what shall we speak, and how shall we be justified? God hath found the iniquity of thy servants, behold we are servants to my lord, also we, also [he] in whose hands the cup was found.

17. And he said, be it far from me to do this, the man in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my servant, and go ye up in peace to your father.

18. And Judah came to him, and said, by me, my lord, let thy servant I pray speak a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger be kindled against thy servant, because as thou art, so is Pharaoh.

19. My lord asked his servants, saying, have ye a father or brother?

20. And we said to my lord, we have a father grown old, and the youngest son of his old age, and his brother is dead, and he alone is left to his mother, and his father loveth him.

21. And thou saidst to thy servants, cause him to come down to me, and I will set mine eye upon him.

22. And we said to my lord, the boy cannot leave his father, and let him leave his father, and he will die.

23. And thou saidst to thy servants, if your youngest brother doth not come down with you, ye shall not add to see my faces. 24. And it came to pass, when we came up to thy servant my father, and we told him the words of my lord.

25. And our father said, return ye, buy for us a little food.

26. And we said, we cannot go down, if our youngest brother be with us we will go down, because we cannot see the faces of the man, and our youngest brother he be not with us.

27. And thy servant my father said to us, ye know that my wife bare me two.

28. And one went forth from me, and I said, surely in tearing to pieces he was torn to pieces, and I have not seen him hitherto. 29. And ye also take this from with my faces, and hurt may happen to him, and ye will cause my gray hair to go down in evil to the grave.

5731. Verses 1, 2. And he commanded him who was over
his house, saying, fill the wallets of the men with food, as much
as they can bear, and place every one's silver in the mouth of
his wallet. And my cup, the cup of silver, place in the mouth

of the wallet of the youngest, and the silver of his corn; and he did according to the word of Joseph which he spake. And he commanded him who was over his house, saying, signifies influx from himself: fill the wallets of the men with food, signifies into the natural with the good of truth: as much as they can bear, signifies to sufficiency and place every one's silver in the mouth of his wallet, signifies with truth anew in the exterior natural and my cup, the cup of silver, place in the mouth of the wallet of the youngest, signifies interior truth given to the medium and the silver of his corn, signifies the truth of good: and he did according to the word of Joseph which he spake, signifies that it was so done.

5732. "And he commanded him who was over his house, saying," that it signifies influx from himself, appears from the signification of commanding, as being influx, n. 5486; and from the signification of who was over his house, as denoting who communicated; that it was from himself, namely, from the celestial internal, which Joseph represents, is evident. That to command denotes influx, is because in heaven no one is commanded or ordered, but thought is communicated, and the other willingly acts according thereto; the communication of thought, with a desire which wills that something be done, is influx, and on the part of the recipient is perception; wherefore by commanding is also signified perception, n. 3661, 3682. Moreover, in heaven they not only think, but also discourse together, yet concerning those things which are of wisdom; but in their discourse there is nothing of command to another, for no one wills to be a lord, and thus to regard another as a servant, but every one wills to minister and serve another. Hence it is evident what is the form of government in the heavens; this form is described by the Lord in Matthew: "It shall not be so among you; but whosoever would be great among you, ought to be your minister; and whosoever would be first, ought to be your servant," xx. 26, 27. And again: "He that is greatest of you, shall be your servant; whosoever shall exalt himself, shall be humbled, and whosoever shall humble himself, shall be exalted," xxiii. 11, 12. So he doeth, who from the heart loves the neighbor, or who is sensible of delight and blessedness in doing good to others without any view to himself, that is, who has charity towards the neighbor.
