is too late, that the gospel is a truth and of the last consequence.

The Designs and Extent of the Deaty of

CHRIST.

1. THAT the prophecies of his death anel *sufferings might be fulfilled. * “ I was daily

with you in the temple teaching, and ye took · me not: but the scriptures niust be fulfilled.† And the scripture' was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. I They said, therefore, among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall

be' ; that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. For these things were done that the scriptures should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be brokenAnd again, an. other scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced."**

2. Christ, in suffering, bare our sins in his own body, on the tree; that we might die to sin, and live to God." Se Christ was once of fered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. * Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins should live unto righteousness : by whose stripes ye were healed. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows : yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him ; and with his stripes we are healed. All we, like sheep, have gone a. stray ; we have turned every one to his own way : and the Lord hath laid on him the ini. quity of us all. He shall see of the travial of his soul, and be satisfied ; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many ; for he shall bear their iniquities."

3. To fulfil and abolish the law of commande ments, contained in ordinances, or the cerimo. nial dispensation, and thus break down the middle wall of partition between Jews and Gentiles, and reconcile both to God, in one body, by the cross, &c. and to redeem us from, that law. “ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abole ished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of

commandments contained in ordinances; for
to make in himself of twain one new man, so
making peace : and that he might reconcile
both unto God in one body by the cross, having
slain the enmity, thereby. * But when the ful-
ness of the time was come, God sent forth his
Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
to redeem them that were under the law, that
we might receive the adoption of sons.f Christ
hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us : for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree ;
that the blessing of Abraham might come on
the Gentiles through Jesus Christ ; that we
might receive the promise of the Spirit through
faith.??
14. To give his flesh to be meat, and his blood
to be drink; or to give life to mankind. “ For
the bread of God is he which cometh down from
heayen, and giveth life unto the world. This
is the bread which cometh down from heaven,
that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am
the living bread which came down from heav-
en; if any man eat of this bread he shall live
forever ; & the bread that I will give is liflesh,
which I will give for the life of the world. Then
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto
you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
and drink his blood, ye have no life in you,
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood,
hath eternal life; and I will raise hinn up at the
last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my
blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh

and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in meztang I in him. As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father : so he that leatethm even he shall live by meThis is that bread which came down from heaven'not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead her that eateth of this bread shall live forever."* sito

5. To confirm and ratify, seal and establish, his testament, doctrine, " mission, &c. "And he shall confirm the covenant with many for orie week ; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. And, as they were eating, Jesus tork bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Pake, eat; this is my body And he took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my

blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might re. ceive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead; otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Whereupon neither the first testament was ded. icated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of

goats with water, and scarlet wool and hyssop, pove sprinkled both the book and all the people,

saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.??* mv6 #As the children were partakers of flesh nd blood, he also himself, likewise, took part of the same that throt death, he might destroy him, that had the power of death; that is, the devil; and deliver them, who, through fear of death, were, all their life-time, subject to bon, dage. 36 fangels $ 7. That, by passing through every state, he might gain universal power and dominion.u Forito this end Christ both died, and rose, and sevived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living Bit 8 That he might wash and cleanse us from the guilt and pollution of our sins in his own blood. * For if the blood of bulls, and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer, sprinkling the unelean, sanétifieth to the purifying

of the flesh; how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And almost all things are by the law pnrged with blood ; and without shedding of blood there is sio remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be putrified with these but the heavenly thing's themselves, with better sacrifices than these. ** But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
