Laesus Maritus.

Ad Miram.

Non caeli tuus instar est ocellus;
Non instar tua labra sunt rosarum;
Non sunt lilia pectus ac lacerti.
O vis illa serenitasqve veris,
Qvod vestire rosisqve liliisqve
Posset talibus invidenda rura;
Cui tam splendidus immineret aether
Qvam lux caerulei tua illa ocelli!

Visions of the Future.

I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see, Saw the vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;

Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic

sails,

Pilots of the purple twilight, dropping down with costly

bales;

Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rained a ghastly dew

From the nations' airy navies, grappling in the central

blue;

Far along the world-wide whisper of the south wind rushing warm,

With the standards of the peoples plunging through the thunder-storm;

Till the war-drum throbbed no longer, and the battleflags were furled

In the parliament of man, the federation of the world.

Empfänglichkeit.

In die kalte, herbe Luft
Haucht die Rose keinen Duft.
Zu der Erde Liebeswonne

Wärme dich in Gottes Sonne.

TENNYSON.

W. MUELLER.

Quid sit Futurum.

Vidi (neqve ultra lumina pergere
Humana fas est) fataqve gentium
Promissa mirandosqve cursus
Et speciem venientis aevi.

Vidi scatentem mercibus aera;
Non usitatis vidi ego linteis

Puppes adurgeri et magistros
Vespere purpureo rubentes

Deferre gazas desuper aureas;
Caelumqve sese murmure bellico
Miscere feralesqve labi

Caeruleum per inane rores,
Haerente classi classe per aetheris
Campos nitentes: unde tepentibus
Late susurrabat per orbem
Flaminibus furialis Auster.
Inter procellas fulmine luridas
Depraeliantum signa cohortium
Volvuntur. At tandem tubarum
Vox siluit lituusqve belli.

Iam desierunt martia pandier
Vexilla; iam nunc sedit amabilis

Conventus, ac commune foedus
Unanimae voluere gentes.

Calor divinus.

Aere sub gelido nullos rosa fundit odores;
Ut te terra beet, sole calesce Dei.

Gratitude.

What is grandeur, what is power?
Heavier toil, superior pain.

What the bright reward we gain?
The grateful memory of the good.
Sweet is the breath of vernal shower,
The bee's collected treasures sweet;
Sweet music's melting fall; but sweeter yet
The still small voice of gratitude.

GRAY.

Melody.

Come, rest in this bosom, my own stricken deer; Though the herd have fled from thee, thy home is still

here;

Here still is the smile that no cloud can o'ercast,

And the heart and the hand all thy own to the last.

Oh, what was love made for, if 'tis not the same Through joy and through torments, through glory and shame?

I know not, I ask not, if guilt's in that heart-
I but know that I love thee, whatever thou art.

Thou hast call'd me thy angel in moments of bliss,
And thy angel I'll be, 'mid the horrors of this;
Through the furnace, unshrinking, thy steps to pursue,
And shield thee, and save thee, or-perish there too.

MOORE.

Grata Posteritas.

Qvid dominantum decus est tantum,
Magnificentia, pompa, potentia?
Labor insuavior, angor gravior.
Qvae sunt munera? Laus post funera,
Voxqve piorum grata virorum.

Ver post rores spirat odores,
Suavesqve dapes condunt sibi apes;
Suave canoro sociata choro

Fidium vis est: suavius his est
Grandibus actis et bene factis

Bene dicentis vox pia mentis.

Fides.

Laesus in hoc fessusqve sinu pete, dama, qvietem ;
Qvom socii fugiunt, hic tibi certa domus ;
Hic tibi risus adest et lux innubila frontis,
Et mens perpetua juncta manusqve fide.

Ah qvid amor prodesse valet, ni semper eundem Gaudia et aerumnae, fama pudorqve, vident? Nec scio, nec qvaero, culpamne in pectore celes; Hoc scio, carus eris tu mihi, qvidqvid eris.

Ut me dixisti media inter gaudia divam,
In mediis eadem sim tibi diva malis:

Per flammas tua pone seqvi vestigia, teqve
Eripere, aut tecum dent mihi fata mori.
