1. ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY.

1. WHAT sea lies between Greece and Asia Minor, and what country is on the north of it? Name islands off the Asiatic coast and in the sea, also the large island off the coast of Attica.

2. Where is the Hellespont? the Bosphorus? Derive and explain these two names.

3. What famous city stood in Asia Minor, a little south of the Hellespont? Name other flourishing cities on this coast.

4. What sea lies between Greece and Italy? Name the islands off the western coast of Greece, and the island at the south of Italy.

5. What name was given to South Italy, and what important Grecian colonies were planted there at an early period?

6. What sea washes the western coast of Italy? Name two important islands in it. Where stood Gades, Massilia, Carthage? What nation founded these cities?

7. What mountain chain runs down Greece from the north? What chain branches off from this in an easterly direction, forms a northern boundary to Greece, and terminates at the sea in a lofty peak? Name also the two southern mountains.

8. What other mountain chain, more to the south, also branches off from the first, and runs almost parallel to the second?

9. Name the country thus enclosed between these three chains and the sea; and the river which waters it. Where does this river flow into the sea; and what name is given to its valley?

10. What narrow pass leads out of this country to the south? What country is then reached, and what is its capital?

11. What gulf separates the Peloponnesus from the main land on the north, and what gulf lies between Peloponnesus and Attica? Name two important islands in it.

12. What was the leading state in the Peloponnesus? Name also other states in it. Where were the Olympic games held? Name the four great Grecian games.

13. What city stood on the isthmus joining the Peloponnesus to the main land? And what city is the capital of Attica?

14. Account for so many names of Grecian cities being in the plural number.

15. What mountain chain runs down Italy? Name rivers flowing west and south-west. Describe the situation of Rome.

16. What little stream in North Italy was an important political boundary? What large river waters the northern valley, and by what name is the valley known?

17. Name the three capes of Sicily, the cape at the south of Attica, and the strait between Attica and Euboea.

18. Where were Colchis, Pylos, Gytheum, Platæa, the Piræus, Brundusium, Alexandria, Olynthus?

19. Æneas is said to have founded Rome,-trace his voyage from Ilium to the Tiber (according to Virgil).

20. Trace Hannibal's march from Saguntum to the Padus.

2. MYTHOLOGY.

1. Name the twelve principal heathen deities, the "dii majorum gentium." Name also the king of gods and men, and his sister and brothers. State how the kingdom of all things was divided amongst them.

2. Who were Saturn and Rhea? By what other names is Rhea known?

3. Name the Titans, and give some account of them, and distinguish them from the Giants; name also the Fates, and the Furies.

4. What deity presided over war? Over music, and the fine arts? Wisdom and accomplishments? Wine and festive joys? What deity was the personification of the reproductive power of nature ?

5. Distinguish Pluto and Plutus. Who were Hecate, Luna, and Diana? Hence explain "diva triformis."

6. Name some of the inferior deities, "dii minorum gentium," and state their office, character, and from what classification of the Roman senate the appellation was derived. Who presided over shepherds? Husbandry Flowers? Boundaries? Gardens ?

7. What mountain is fabled to have been the abode of the gods? Name places famous for the worship of Juno-Apollo-Minerva— Venus.

8. Name the nine Muses. Who were the Nymphs? The Graces ?

The Dryads? The Nereides? The Naiades? Distinguish Dryads and Hamadryads.

9. Name some of the dignified men or heroes, "dii indigetes." Give some account of one or more of the following:-Hercules, Castor and Pollux, Cadmus, Theseus, Perseus, Bellerophon.

10. Write a short account of the events which took place in the two Theban wars, explaining the phrases "Septem contra Thebas," and "Epigoni."

11. What famous trading expedition took place in the "heroic age"? Name the ship, the captain, some of the crew; and give an account of

the voyage.

12. What poem describes a famous siege which took place in the "heroic age"? What caused the war? Who commanded the Grecian armies? Name other leaders who distinguished themselves on each side.

13. Who led away the survivors, and what became of them? What book contains the account of this expedition?

14. Give an account of the calamities which befel some of the Grecian leaders.

15. For what is Edipus famous? Eteocles and Polynices? Codrus ? Minos? Orestes? Antigone? Medea? Alcestis? Clytemnestra?

3. ANCIENT GREECE, &c. I.

1. One of the earliest facts in Grecian history is what is called "The return of the Heraclidæ," or the "Dorian migration;" give a short account of this; the actors; whence they came, and what conquests they effected.

2. The original inhabitants were either reduced to dependence or migrated;—where did many of them settle? What colonies also were then established?

3. Into what three races may the people called Hellenes be classed? And to whom was this appellation first applied? To which of the three races did the Spartans belong? And to which the Athenians? Class other Grecian peoples according to their races.

4. What three classes of people composed the Laconian population? Illustrate their social position by comparison with the inhabitants of England after the Norman Conquest.

5. Name the lawgiver of Sparta, and mention any notable customs
