EXAMINATIONS, as tests of competency or fitness for posts of trust and usefulness, are amongst the distinguishing marks of progress of the present age. When the system of examination for public appointments was first adopted, students were in some difficulty about the standard of proficiency expected from them, and tutors were somewhat at a loss as to the method of preparation most desirable for success, from the want of some test of proficiency in a tangible and practical form, which want the present little work was intended to supply. The new examinations instituted during the past year by the English Universities, for those who are not members of their respective societies, has drawn increased attention to the importance and necessity of continually recurring tests of progress for young students.
