PREFACE.

ENCOURAGED by the favourable reception given to Part I., I am induced to publish this Second Part of the "Test-Book for Students," designed for School use; and many of the papers arranged especially for preparation, and as a previous test for the "New Oxford Examinations" in Language.

The first Section, with some parts of the papers upon Literature, is, perhaps, beyond average School-boys, and should either be deferred, or carefully explained by familiar lectures—one to each paper; indeed, all the papers may thus, with great advantage, be first explained and illustrated, and subsequently used as a test.

For the papers upon Latin and Greek, the Grammars in ordinary use will be sufficient, with the Exercise books, &c. of the late Rev. T. K. Arnold, who thus wrote some years since :—

"The importance of frequent examination cannot be expressed too strongly, and is felt by every able tutor. It is not only a

very important means of calling forth the energies of a pupil, and of training him to the exercise of independent power; but it is a TEST, without the frequent application of which, both master and pupil will be in constant danger of mistaking the power of acquiring knowledge for knowledge actually acquired."

Part III. "Mathematical and Physical Science," completing the work, will soon be ready.

BRIDGWATER, February, 1858.
