SECTION I.-LANGUAGE.

1. SOUNDS AND THEIR EXPRESSIONS. VOWELS. I.

1. NAME all the organs by which the human voice is formed and modified.

2. Describe the larynx, and the formation of the voice; and illustrate by comparison with musical instruments, some shrill, some deep.

3. Describe the modification which the sound undergoes by compression or expansion of the other organs; and illustrate this by comparison with musical instruments.

4. Give some description also of the various cries, &c. uttered by animals, in comparison with the human voice.

5. How many distinct sounds are generally reckoned as being able to be made by simple emission of breath; and what are they; and what name is given to them?

6. Considering the simple sounds as six, namely, ē (ee), ā (ey), ah, au, ō, oo, write (if possible) words exemplifying the sound in

A. English.

B. Latin.

C. Greek.

7. How are these sounds made short? Write words expressing the short sound of each.

8. Write the corresponding short sound to each of the above six sounds, or its representative in English or Latin words, and explain the true sound represented by the ĭ, ĕ, and ă in English and Latin.

9. Explain these sounds by shortening the vowel-sounds in beet, bate, and Bath; and also in hawk and fool. Lengthen, also, the short sounds in mid, met, pull.
