CONCISE ACCOUNT

OF

THE METROPOLIS.

W

ORIGIN AND EXTENT.

ITHOUT attempting to wander into the remote regions of legendary narration, we may be allowed to conjecture, that London was a place of much resort, anterior to the invasion of Britain by Julius Cæfar; and on the arrival of that prince in this island, was the capital of the Trincbantes *, one of the many small nations into which Britain was formerly divided.

The Trinobantes appear fcarcely to have been established in Britain at the period of the first Roman invafion; their new city, which foon after became of diftinguifhed confequence, being then fo inconfiderable, that it is not even mentioned by Cæfar. Haraffed by destructive wars with their neighbours, they were among the firft of the confederated British States, who submitted to the Roman yoke; but becoming weary of their obedience to their new mafters, they again joined the Britons, under the heroine Boadicea, in the year 61 of the Chrif

This name was probably given them by their neighbours, on account of their having newly come from the continent into Britain, and having there founded a city, called Tri-now, or The New City, the most ancient name of the renowned metropolis of Britain.
