4 Make not increasing gold your trust,
Nor set your heart on glittering dust;
Why will you grasp the fleeting smoke,
And not believe what God has spoke?
5 Once has his awful voice declared,
Once and again my ears have heard,—
"All power is his eternal due;

He must be feared and trusted too."

mf 6 For sovereign power reigns not alone;
Grace is a partner of the throne:
Thy grace and justice, mighty Lord!
Shall well divide our last reward.

PSALM 63, First Part, L. M.

Adoption.

REAT God! indulge my humble claim,

G Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest;

The glories, that compose thy name,

Stand all engaged to make me blest.

2 Thou great and good, thou just and wise! Thou art my Father, and my God;

And I am thine, by sacred ties,

Thy son, thy servant, bought with blood.

mf 3 With early feet I love t' appear

f

Among thy saints, and seek thy face;
Oft have I seen thy glory there,

And felt the power of sovereign grace.
4 I'll lift my hands, I'll raise my voice,
While I have breath to pray or praise;
This work shall make my heart rejoice,
And spend the remnant of my days.

PSALM 63, Second Part, L. M.
Seeking God.

GOD! thou art my God alone;
Early to thee my soul shall cry ;-

A pilgrim in a land unknown,

A thirsty land whose springs are dry.

2 Oh! that it were as it hath been,
When, praying in the holy place,
Thy power and glory I have seen,
And marked the footsteps of thy grace.

3 Yet, through this rough and thorny maze,
I follow hard on thee, my God!
Thy hand unseen upholds my ways,

I safely tread where thou hast trod.
4 Thee, in the watches of the night,
When I remember on my bed,
Thy presence makes the darkness light,
Thy guardian wings are round my head.

5 Better than life itself thy love;

Dearer than all beside to me;
For whom have I in heaven above,
Or what on earth compared with thee?

PSALM 63, First Part, C. M.
The Morning of the Lord's Day.
ARLY, my God! without delay,
I haste to seek thy face;

EA

My thirsty spirit faints away,
Without thy cheering grace.

2 So pilgrims on the scorching sand,
Beneath a burning sky,

Long for a cooling stream at hand,
And they must drink or die.

3 I've seen thy glory and thy power
Through all thy temple shine;

My God! repeat that heavenly hour,
That vision so divine.

4 Not life itself, with all its joys,
Can my best passions move;
Or raise so high my cheerful voice,
As thy forgiving love.

5 Thus, till my last expiring day,
I'll bless my God and King;
Thus will I lift my hands to pray,
And tune my lips to sing.

PSALM 63, Second Part, C. M.
Meditations by Night.

1 'T WAS in the watches of the night,
I thought upon thy power;

I kept thy lovely face in sight,
Amid the darkest hour.

V

2 My flesh lay resting on my bed,
My soul arose on high;

"My God, my life, my hope," I said,
Bring thy salvation nigh."

my 3 My spirit labors up thy hill,
And climbs the heavenly road;
But thy right hand upholds me still,
While I pursue my God.

PSALM 63, S. M.

Rejoicing in God.

Y God! permit my tongue
This joy, to call thee mine;
And let my early cries prevail
To taste thy love divine.
2 My thirsty fainting soul
Thy mercy doth implore;
Not travelers, in desert lands,
Can pant for water more.
3 For life, without thy love,
No relish can afford;

No joy can be compared to this,—
To serve and please the Lord.

4 In wakeful hours at night,

I call my God to mind;

I think, how wise thy counsels are,
And all thy dealings kind.

5 Since thou hast been my help,
To thee my spirit flies;

And, on thy watchful providence,
My cheerful hope relies.

mf 6 The shadow of thy wings
My soul in safety keeps;
I follow where my Father leads,
And he supports my steps.

When foes in secret spread the snare,
Let my salvation be thy care.
2 Thy justice and thy power display,
And scatter far thy foes away;

While listening nations learn thy_word,
And saints triumphant bless the Lord.
3 Then shall thy church exalt her voice,
And all that love thy name rejoice;
By faith approach thine awful throne,
And plead the merits of thy Son.

PSALM 65, First Part, L. M.,

Public Prayer and Praise.

HE praise of Zion waits for thee,

My God! and praise becomes thy house;
There shall thy saints thy glory see,
And there perform their public vows.
2 O Thou, whose mercy bends the skies,
To save when humble sinners pray!
All lands to thee shall lift their eyes,
And every yielding heart obey.

3 Blest is the man, whom thou shalt choose,
And give him kind access to thee;
Give him a place within thy house,

To taste thy love divinely free.
4 With dreadful glory, God fulfills

What his afflicted saints request;
And with almighty wrath reveals
His love, to give his churches rest.

PSALM 65, Second Part, L. M.

The Seasons of the Year.

God the race of man depends,
Far as the earth's remotest ends;
At his command the morning ray
Smiles in the east, and leads the day.

The evening and the morn rejoice,

Laden with fruit, and dressed in flowers.

Abundant food the valleys yield;

The valleys shout with cheerful voice,
And neighb'ring hills repeat their joys.

O'er every field thy glories shine;
Through every month thy gifts appear;
Great God! thy goodness crowns the year.

PSALM 65, First Part, C. M.
Worship of God in his Temple.

PRAISE waits in Zion, Lord! for thee;
There shall our vows be paid;
Thou hast an ear when sinners pray;
All flesh shall seek thine aid.

2 O Lord! our guilt and fears prevail,
But pard'ning grace is thine;

And thou wilt grant us power and skill,
To conquer every sin.

3 Blest are the men, whom thou wilt choose
To bring them near thy face;

Give them a dwelling in thy house,
To feast upon thy grace.

4 In answering what thy church requests,
Thy truth and terror shine;

And works of dreadful righteousness
Fulfill thy kind design.

5 Thus shall the wondering nations see,
The Lord is good and just;

The distant isles shall fly to thee,
