2 Great God! mine eyes with pleasure look
On the dear volume of thy book;
There my Redeemer's face I see,

And read his name who died for me.
3 Let the false raptures of the mind
Be lost, and vanish in the wind;
Here I can fix my hope secure ;
This is thy word, and must endure.

HYMN 3, C. M.

The Holy Scriptures.

1 LA
ADEN with guilt, and full of fears,
I fly to thee, my Lord!
And not a glimpse of hope appears,
But in thy written word.

2 The volume of my Father's grace
Does all my grief assuage;

Here, I behold my Saviour's face,
Almost in every page.

3 Here, consecrated water flows,
To quench my thirst of sin;

[ocr errors]

Here, the fair tree of knowledge grows;—
No danger dwells therein.

4 This is the judge that ends the strife,
Where wit and reason fail;—

My guide to everlasting life,
Through all this gloomy vale.

5 Oh! may thy counsels, mighty God!
My roving feet command:
Nor I forsake the happy road,
That leads to thy right hand.

HYMN 4, L. M.

A Saviour seen in the Scriptures.

OW let my soul, eternal King!

Now

To thee its grateful tribute bring;
My knee, with humble homage, bow,
My tongue perform its solemn vow.

mf 2 All nature sings thy boundless love,
In worlds below, and worlds above;
But, in thy blessed word, I trace
Diviner wonders of thy grace.

3 There, what delightful truths I read!
There, I behold the Saviour bleed:
His name salutes my listening ear,
Revives my heart, and checks my fear.
4 There, Jesus bids my sorrows cease,、
And gives my lab'ring conscience peace;
Raises my grateful passions high,
And points to mansions in the sky.

5 For love like this, Oh! let my song,
Through endless years, thy praise prolong;
Let distant climes thy name adore,

HYMN 7, L. M.

A written Revelation.

ET everlasting glories crown

[ocr errors]

Thy head, my Saviour, and my Lord!
Thy hands have brought salvation down,
And writ the blessings in thy word.

2 In vain the trembling conscience seeks
Some solid ground to rest upon;
With long despair the spirit breaks,
Till we apply to Christ alone.

3 How well thy blessed truths agree!
How wise and holy thy commands !
Thy promises-how firm they be!

How firm our hope and comfort stands!
4 Should all the forms that men devise
Assault my faith, with treacherous art,
I'd call them vanity and lies,

m" 1

And bind the gospel to my heart.

HYMN 8, L. M.

The Power of Truth.

THIS is the word of truth and love,

Sent to the nations from above;

Jehovah here resolves to show
What his almighty grace can do.

2 This remedy did wisdom find,
To heal diseases of the mind;-
This sovereign balm, whose virtues can
Restore the ruined creature man.

3 The gospel bids the dead revive,—
Sinners obey the voice. and live;

Dry bones are raised, and clothed afresh,
And hearts of stone are turned to flesh.

f

4 May but this grace my soul renew,
Let sinners gaze, and hate me too;
The word that saves me doth engage
A sure defence from all their rage.

GOD.

HYMN 9, L. M.

Existence of God.

HERE is a God!--all nature speaks,

THE

Through earth, and air, and sea, and skies;
See!-from the clouds his glory breaks,
When earliest beams of morning rise!

2 The rising sun serenely bright,

Throughout the world's extended frame,
Inscribes, in characters of light,

His mighty Maker's glorious name.
3 Ye curious minds, who roam abroad,

And trace creation's wonders o'er!
Confess the footsteps of your God;
Bow down before him and adore.

HYMN 10, C. M.

Creation and Providence.

1 LORD! when my raptured thought surveys

Creation's beauties o'er,

All nature joins to teach thy praise,
And bid my soul adore.

2 Where'er I turn my gazing eyes,
Thy radiant footsteps shine;
Ten thousand pleasing wonders rise,
And speak their source divine.

3 On me thy providence hath shone
With gentle, smiling rays;

Oh! let my lips and life make known
Thy goodness and thy praise.

4 All-bounteous Lord! thy grace impart;
Oh! teach me to improve

Thy gifts with ever-grateful heart,
And crown them with thy love.

HXMN 11, H. M.

Perfections of God's Government.

f" 1 THE Lord Jehovah reigns;

[merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

His throne is built on high;

The garments he assumes

Are light and majesty:

His glories shine with beams so bright,
No mortal eye can bear the sight.

2 The thunders of his hand

Keep the wide world in awe;
His wrath and justice stand

To guard his holy law:

And, where his love resolves to bless,
His truth confirms and seals the grace.
3 Through all his perfect work,

Surprising wisdom shines;
Confounds the powers of hell,

And breaks their cursed designs:
Strong is his arm-and shall fulfill
His great decrees-his sovereign will.
4 And can this mighty King

mf 1

Of glory condescend,-
And will he write his name,-
My Father and my Friend?
I love his name,—I love his word;
Join, all my powers! and praise the Lord.

ETERNAL

HYMN 12, C. M.

God, the Creator.

'TERNAL Wisdom! thee we praise,
Thee the creation sings;

With thy loved name, rocks, hills, and seas,
And heaven's high palace rings.

2 How wide thy hand hath spread the sky!
How glorious to behold!

Tinged with a blue of heavenly dye,
And starred with sparkling gold.

3 Thy glories blaze all nature round,
And strike the gazing sight,

Through skies, and seas, and solid ground,
With terror and delight.

4 Infinite strength, and equal skill,

Shine through the worlds abroad;
