5 Ye poor! who tremble at the word,
Distressed, and helpless too,-
Oh! come and welcome to the Lord,
For he was born for you.

HYMN 77, L. M.

The Star of Bethlehem.

HEN, marshaled on the nightly plain,
The glittering host bestud the sky,
One star alone, of all the train,

Can fix the sinner's wandering eye.

<" 2 Hark! hark!-to God the chorus breaks,
From every host, from every gem;
But one alone the Saviour speaks,-
It is the Star of Bethlehem.

3 Once on the raging seas I rode,

The storm was loud, the night was dark,The ocean yawned-and rudely blowed

The wind that tossed my foundering bark.

4 Deep horror then my vitals froze,

Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem;— When suddenly a star arose,

It was the Star of Bethlehem.

5 It was my guide, my light, my all;
It bade my dark forebodings cease;

And, through the storm, and danger's thrall,
It led me to the port of peace.

6 Now safely moored-my perils o'er,
I'll sing, first in night's diadem,

For ever and for evermore,

The Star-the Star of Bethlehem!

HYMN 78, C. M.

Christ's Commission.

my 1 COME, happy souls! approach your God,

[blocks in formation]

With new melodious songs;

Come, render to almighty grace

The tribute of your tongues.

2 So strange, so boundless was the love,
That pitied dying men,

The Father sent his equal Son,

To give them life again.

3 Thy hands, dear Jesus! were not armed
With a revenging rod;

No hard commission to perform
The vengeance of a God.

4 But all was mercy, all was mild,
And wrath forsook the throne,

When Christ, on the kind errand, came,
And brought salvation down.

5 Here, sinners! you may heal your wounds,
And wipe your sorrows dry;

mf Trust in the mighty Saviour's name, And you shall never die.

6 See, dearest Lord! our willing souls
Accept thine offered grace;

We bless the great Redeemer's love,
And give the Father praise.

HYMN 79, C. M.

Christ's Compassion to the Weak.

mf 1 WITH joy we meditate the grace

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

Of our High-Priest above;
His heart is made of tenderness,

His bowels melt with love.

2 Touched with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame;

He knows what sore temptations mean,
For he has felt the same.

3 But spotless, innocent, and pure,
The great Redeemer stood;
While Satan's fiery darts he bore,

And did resist to blood.

4 He, in the days of feeble flesh,
Poured out his cries and tears;
And, in his measure, feels afresh
What every member bears.

5 Then let our humble faith address
His mercy and his power;
We shall obtain delivering grace,
In the distressing hour.

HYMN 80, C. M.

God glorified in the Gospel.

1 THE Lord, descending from above,

Invites his children near;

f

While power, and truth, and boundless love,
Display their glories here.

mf 2 Here, in thy gospel's wondrous frame,
Fresh wisdom we pursue;

A thousand angels learn thy name,
Beyond whate'er they knew.

3 Thy name is writ in fairest lines,-
Thy wonders here we trace;

Wisdom through all the mystery shines,-
And shines in Jesus' face.

4 The law its best obedience owes
To our incarnate God;

And thy revenging justice shows
Its honors in his blood.

5 But still the lustre of thy grace
Our warmer thoughts employs,
Gilds the whole scene with brighter rays,
And more exalts our joys.

HYMN 81, L. M.

Peace and Hope through Christ's Intercession.

HE lives the great Redeemer lives!

What joy the blest assurance gives!
And now, before his Father God,
Pleads the full merits of his blood.
2 Repeated crimes awake our fears,
And justice, armed with frowns, appeɛrs;
But, in the Saviour's lovely face,
Sweet mercy smiles-and all is peace.

3 In every dark, distressful hour,
When sin and Satan join their power,
Let this dear hope repel the dart--
That Jesus bears us on his heart.

4 Great Advocate, almighty Friend!
On thee our humble hopes depend:
Our cause can never, never fail,
For Jesus pleads, and must prevail.

HYMN 82, C. M.

Praise to the Saviour.

1 OHII for a thousand tongues to sing

My dear Redeemer's praise!

[ocr errors]

The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace!

mf 2 My gracious Master and my God!
Assist me to proclaim,

dol

To spread, through all the earth abroad,
The honors of thy name.

3 Jesus the name that calms my fears,
That bids my sorrows cease;
'Tis music to my ravished ears;

'Tis life, and health, and peace.

mf 4 He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the pris'ner free;

dol

83

His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.

5 Let us obey, we then shall know,
Shall feel our sins forgiven;
Anticipate our heaven below,
And own, that love is heaven.

Hosannas to Christ.

mf 1 WHAT are those soul-reviving strains,

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

That echo thus from Salem's plains?
What anthems loud, and louder still,
Sweetly resound from Zion's hill?

2 Lo! 't is an infant chorus sings
Hosanna to the King of kings:

3

The Saviour comes, and babes proclaim
Salvation, sent in Jesus' name..

Nor these alone their voice shall raise,
For we will join this song of praise:
Still Israel's children forward press,
To hail the Lord their righteousness.
4 Proclaim hosannas loud and clear;
See David's Son and Lord appear
Glory and praise on earth be given,—
Hosanna in the highest heaven.

HYMN 84, C. M.

Jesus, my Trust.

ESUS! I love thy charming name,
'Tis music to mine ear;

V

Fain would I sound it out so loud,

That earth and heaven should hear.

mf" 2 Yes,-thou art precious to my soul,
My joy, my hope, my trust
Jewels, to thee, are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

3 All my capacious powers can wish
In thee most richly meet;
Not to mine eyes is light so dear,
Nor friendship half so sweet.

dol 4 Thy grace still dwells upon my heart,
And sheds its fragrance there ;—
The healing balm of all its wounds,
The cordial of its care.

Then, speechless, clasp thee in mine arms.-
The antidote of death.

HYMN 85, C. M.

·God reconciled in Christ.

DEAREST of all the names above,
My Jesus and my God!

Who can resist thy heavenly love,
Or trifle with thy blood?

2 'Tis by the merits of thy death,
The Father smiles again;
'Tis by thine interceding breath,
The Spirit dwells with men.
2 Till God in human flesh I see,
My thoughts no comfort find;
The holy, just, and sacred Three
Are terrors to my mind.

4 But, if Immanuel's face appear,
My hope, my joy begins;
His name forbids my slavish fear,
His grace removes my sins.

5 While Jews on their own law rely,
And Greeks of wisdom boast ;-

I love th' incarnate mystery,
And there I fix my trust.
