Their solemn vows again renew,
And walk in filial fear.

3 Thy Spirit then will speak,
Through lips of humble clay,
Till hearts of adamant shall break,--
Till rebels shall obey.

4 Now lend thy gracious ear,
Now listen to our cry;

446

Oh! come, and bring salvation near ;—
Our souls on thee rely.

HYMN 446, L. M.

Weeping over Sinners.

aff 1 ARISE, my tenderest thoughts! arise; Dissolve in grief, my streaming eyes! And thou, my heart! with anguish feel Those evils which thou canst not heal. 2 See human nature sunk in shame; See scandal poured on Jesus' name; The Father wounded, through the Son, The world abused, the soul undone ! 3 See the short course of vain delight, Closing in everlasting night,

mf

In flames that no abatement know,
Though bitter tears for ever flow!

4 My God! I feel the mournful scene,
And yearn with grief o'er dying men ;
While fain my pity would reclaim
Souls that may perish in the flame.
5 But feeble my compassion proves,
And can but weep, where most it loves:
Thine own all-saving arm employ,
And turn these drops of grief to joy.

HYMN 447, H. M.

The Jubilee proclaimed.

1 BLOW ye the trumpet!-blow,
The gladly solemn sound!
Let all the nations know,

To earth's remotest bound,-
The year of jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.

mf

f

2- Exalt the Lamb of God,-
The sin-atoning Lamb;
Redemption by his blood,

Through all the world, proclaim:
The year of jubilee is come;
Returr, ye ransomed sinners! home.

3 Ye slaves of sin and hell!

Your liberty receive;
And safe in Jesus dwell,

And blest in Jesus live;
The year of jubilee is come;

Return, ye ransomed singers! home.

The news of pard'ning grace:
Ye happy souls! draw near,
Behold your Saviour's face:
The year of jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.

Has full atonement made:
Ye weary spirits! rest,

Ye mourning souls! be glad:
The year of jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.

HYMN 448, L. M.

Hope in Times of Darkness.

WHILE I to grief my soul gave way,

To see the work of God decline, Methought I heard the Saviour say,"Dismiss thy fears, the ark is mine. 2 "Though for a time I hid my face, Rely upon my love and power; Still wrestle at the throne of grace, And wait for a reviving hour.

3 "Take down thy long-neglected harp

I've seen thy tears, and heard thy prayer; The winter season has been sharp,

But spring shall all its wastes repair.”

4 Lord! I obey,-my hopes revive;

Come, join with me, ye saints! and sing, Our foes in vain against us strive,

For God will help and triumph bring.

HYMN 449, L. M.

The Vision of dry Bones.

aff 1 LOOK down, O Lord! with pitying eye,

[merged small][ocr errors]

Loc
See Adam's race in ruin lie;

Sin spreads its trophies o'er the ground,
And scatters slaughtered heaps around.

2 And can these dead awake and live?
And can these perished bones revive?
That, mighty God! to thee is known;
That wondrous work is all thine own.

3 Thy ministers are sent in vain,
To prophesy upon the slain,

In vain they call, in vain they cry,-
Till thine almighty aid is nigh.

4 But if thy Spirit deign to breathe,

Life spreads through all the realms of death;
Dry bones obey thy powerful voice,-
They move, they waken, they rejoice.

5 So, when thy trumpet's awful sound

[blocks in formation]

Shall shake the heavens, and rend the ground,
Dead saints shall from their tombs arise,
And spring to life beyond the skies.

[ocr errors][merged small]

mf 2 He gilds thy mourning face With beams that cannot fade; His all-resplendent grace

[ocr errors]

He pours around thy head;
The nations round

Thy form shall view,

With lustre new,
Divinely crowned.

[ocr errors]

3 In honor to his name,

Reflect that sacred light;
And loud that grace proclaim,
Which makes thy darkness bright;
Pursue his praise,

Till sovereign love,
In worlds above,
The glory raise.

4 There, on his holy hill,
A brighter sun shall rise,
And, with his radiance, fill
Those fairer, purer skies;
While, round his throne,
Ten thousand stars,
In nobler spheres,
His influence own.

HYMN 451, 8s and 7s.

Prayer for a Revival.

af 1 SAVIOUR! visit thy plantation;

[ocr errors]

Grant us, Lord! a gracious rain;
All will conie to desolation,

Unless thou return again.

2 Keep no longer at a distance ;-
Shine upon us from on high,
Lest, for want of thine assistance,
Every plant should droop and die.
3 Let our mutual love be fervent,
Make us prevalent in prayers;
Let each one, esteemed thy servant,
Shun the world's enticing snares.
4 Break the tempter's fatal power;
Turn the stony heart to flesh;
And begin, from this good hour,
To revive thy work afresh.

HYMN 452, 8s and 7s.

Future Peace and Glory of Zion

HEAR

TEAR what God, the Lord, hath spoken;"O my people! faint and few,

Comfortless, afflicted, broken,—

Fair abodes I build for you:
Scenes of heart-felt tribulation

Shall no more perplex your ways;

[ocr errors]

You shall name your walls-Salvation,-
And your gates shall all be-Praise."

mj 2 There, like streams that feed the garden,
Pleasures, without end, shall flow;
For the Lord, your faith rewarding,
All his bounty shall bestow:
Still, in undisturbed possession,
Peace and righteousness shall reign;
Never shall you feel oppression-
Hear the voice of war again.

[ocr errors]

3 Ye, no more your suns declining,
Waning moons no more shall see;
But, your griefs for ever ending,
Find eternal noon in me:

453

God will rise, and, shining o'er you,
Change to day the gloom of night;
He, the Lord, will be your glory,-
God your everlasting light.

HYMN 453, 78.

Winning Souls.

aff 1 WOULD you win a soul to God?

Λ

Tell him of a Saviour's blood,

Once for dying sinners spilt,
To atone for all their guilt.

2 Tell him how the streams did glide,
From his hands, his feet, his side,—
How his head, with thorns, was crowned,
And his heart in sorrow drowned:-

aff 3 How he yielded up his breath,
How he agonized in death,
How he lives to intercede,-
Christ, our advocate and head.

4 Tell him,—it was sovereign grace
Led thee first to seek his face;
Made thee choose the better part,
Wrought salvation in thy heart.

5 Tell him of that liberty,

Wherewith Jesus makes us free!
Sweetly speak of sins forgiven,
Earnest of the joys of heaven.
