HYMN 661, L. M.

The Judgment Scene.

1 THE Lord shall come, the earth shall quake,
The mountains to their centre shake;
And, withering from the vault of night,
The stars shall pale their feeble light.
2 The Lord shall come,-but not the same
As once, in lowliness, he came,-
A silent lamb before his foes,—
A weary man, and full of woes.

3 The Lord shall come,—a dreadful form,
With rainbow wreath, and robes of storm,
On cherub wings and wings of wind,—
Appointed Judge of all mankind.

4 Can this be he, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,-
Oppressed by power, and mocked by pride,
The Nazarene-the Crucified?

mp 5 While sinners in despair shall call,

"Rocks,-hide us!-mountains! on us fall!"--
The saints, ascending from the tomb,
Shall joyful sing,-"The Lord is come!"

DAY

HYMN 662, 8s, 7s and 4.

Saints and Sinners judged,

AY of judgment! day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round:
How the summons

Will the sinner's heart confound!
2 See the Judge, our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!

You, who long for his appearing,
Then shall say,- "This God is mine!"

Gracious Saviour!

Own me in that day for thine.
3 At his call, the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature, shaken
By his looks, prepare to flee:
Careless sinner!

What will then become of thee?

mf

4 But to those who have confessed,
Loved and served the Lord below,
He will say, "Come near, ye blesséd!
See the kingdom I bestow!

You for ever

Shall my love and glory know."

GR

HYMN 663, 8s and 7s, Irregular.
Christ coming to Judgment.

1 REAT God! what do I see and hear?-
The end of things created!

Behold the Judge of man appear,

On clouds of glory seated!

The trumpet sounds--the graves restore
The dead which they contained before!-
Prepare, my soul! to meet him.

2 The dead in Christ shall first arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding,
Caught up to meet him in the skies,
With joy their Lord surrounding:
No gloomy fears their souls dismay,
His presence sheds eternal day,

On those prepared to meet him.

3 Great God! what do I see and hear?-The end of things created!

VA I

Behold the Judge of man appear,

On clouds of glory seated!
Low at his cross I view the day,

When heaven and earth shall pass away,
And thus prepare to meet him.

HYMN 664, S. M.

The Judgment in Prospect.

AND will the Judge descend?

And must the dead arise?
And not a single soul escape
His all-discerning eyes?

2 How will my heart endure
The terrors of that day,

When earth and heaven before his face,
Astonished, shrink away?

3 But, ere that trumpet shakes

The mansions of the dead,

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

Hark! from the gospel's cheering sound
What joyful tidings spread!

4 Ye sinners! seek his grace,—
His wrath ye cannot bear;
Fly to the shelter of his cross,
And find salvation there.

5 So shall that curse remove,

By which the Saviour bled;
And the last awful day shall pour
His blessings on your head.

HYMN 665, C. P. M.

The Saint at Christ's right Hand.

WHE

WHEN thou, my righteous Judge! shalt come
To fetch thy ransomed people home,
Shall I among them stand?

Shall such a worthless worm as I,
Who sometimes am afraid to die,
Be found at thy right hand?

2 Blest Saviour! grant it by thy grace;
Be thou my only hiding-place,

In this th' accepted day;

Thy pard'ning voice, Oh! let me hear,
To still my unbelieving fear,

Nor let me fall, I pray.

mf 3 Among thy saints let me be found, Whene'er th' archangel's trump shall sound, To see thy smiling face;

Then filled with rapture shall I sing,
While heaven's resounding mansions ring
With shouts of sovereign grace.

SEE

HYMN 666, 8s, 7s and 4.

The Sinner's Doom.

EE th' eternal Judge descending,
View him seated on his throne!
Now, poor sinner! now lamenting,
Stand and hear thine awful doom;-
Trumpets call thee!—

Stand and hear thine awful doom.
2 Hear the cries he now is venting,
Filled with dread of fiercer pain;

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

While in anguish thus lamenting,
That he ne'er was born again!
Greatly mourning,-

That he ne'er was born again !—
3 "Yonder sits my slighted Saviour,
With the marks of dying love;
Oh! that I had sought his favor,
When I felt his Spirit move!
Golden moments,

When I felt his Spirit move!"

4 Now, despisers! look and wonder;
Hope and sinners here must part;
Louder than a peal of thunder,

THA

HYMN 667, L. M.

The Day of Wrath.

'HAT day of wrath!—that dreadful day,
When heaven and earth shall pass away!-
What power shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day,—

2 When, shriveling like a parchéd scroll,
The flaming heavens together roll;

And louder yet-and yet more dread,-
Swells the high trump that wakes the dead?
3 Oh! on that day--that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be thou, O Christ! the sinner's stay,-
Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

HYMN 668, S. M..

The Lord coming to Judgment.
EHOLD! the day is come,

BEHOLD!

The righteous Judge is near;

And sinners, trembling at their doom,
Shall soon their sentence hear.

2 Angels, in bright attire,

Conduct him through the skies;

Darkness and tempests, smoke and fire,
Attend him as he flies.

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

3 How awful is the sight!

How loud the thunders roar!
The sun forbears to give his light,
And stars are seen no more.

4 The whole creation groans,
But saints arise and sing

They are the ransomed of the Lord,
And he their God and King.

THE

HEAVEN.

HYMN 669, C. M.

The cheering Prospect of Heaven.
1 THERE is a land of pure delight,
Where saints immortal reign,
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.

2 There, everlasting spring abides,
And never-withering flowers;
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

dol 3 Sweet fields, beyond the swelling flood,
Stand dressed in living green;

So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan rolled between.

4 But tim'rous mortals start and shrink
To cross this narrow sea;
And linger, shivering on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

5 Oh! could we make our doubts remove,--
Those gloomy doubts that rise,-

And see the Canaan that we love,
With unbeclouded eyes;-

mf 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood,
And view the landscape o'er,-

V

Not Jordan's streams, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.
