SUNDRY CIVIL APPROPRIATION BILL, 1921.

HEARING CONDUCTED BY THE SUBCOMMITTEE, MESSRS. JAMES W. GOOD (CHAIRMAN), WILLIAM S. VARE, WALTER W. MAGEE, JOSEPH W. BYRNS, AND JAMES A. GALLIVAN, OF THE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, IN CHARGE OF THE SUNDRY CIVIL APPROPRIATION BILL FOR 1921, ON THE DAYS FOLLOWING, NAMELY:

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1920.

TREASURY DEPARTMENT.

STATEMENTS OF MR. JAMES A. WETMORE, ACTING SUPERVISING ARCHITECT; MR. JOHN H. SCHAEFER, ACTING SUPERINTENDENT, MAINTENANCE DIVISION; MR. N. S. THOMPSON, SUPERINTENDENT, MECHANICAL AND ENGINEERING DIVISION; DR. R. H. CREEL, ASSISTANT SURGEON GENERAL; AND MR. N. V. PERRY, CONSTRUCTING ENGINEER, PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE.

PUBLIC BUILDINGS, CONSTRUCTION, RENT, AND SITES.

The CHAIRMAN. Mr. Wetmore, the estimate this year contains no item for the construction of new buildings, and I take it that that is because you have not been able to let contracts in many cases where the appropriations have already been made, because of the low limit of cost.

Mr. WETMORE. Yes, sir; generally that is the reason.

The CHAIRMAN. Are there some post-office buildings that have been authorized for which the money has not yet been appropriated, or has your program been completed?

Mr. WETMORE. The program has not been completed; no, sir. I can not say whether there are any authorizations where we have not yet acquired the sites and have therefore submitted no estimates for the building.

ALEXANDRIA (LA.) POST OFFICE.

RENT OF TEMPORARY QUARTERS.

The CHAIRMAN. You are asking $4,000 additional for rent of temporary quarters for the accommodation of Government officials and moving expenses incident thereto at Alexandria, La. What is the situation there? Does the Government own a public building at Alexandria?

Mr. WETMORE. Yes, sir.

The CHAIRMAN. When was the original building constructed?
