THE HE following collection is a more general one than any other extant, felected, the Editor flatters himfelf, with that attention which will gain the public approbation. All the modern fongs are included, with fuch of those of an earlier date, whofe merit have ftood the test of time, and which are generally fung in the politest companies. The main intent of fong writing is to promote harmony and good fellowfhip; these principal ingredients to fweeten the cup of life will be found in this collection in fufficient abundance. And whilft care has been taken to exclude any thing that may offend the 1 the ear of decency, humour and conviviality have not been neglected: fo that the devotee of pleasure and mirth will here find matter of amufement, as well as the Bacchanalian and the man of fentiment. Particular attention has also been fhewn to the fair fex, who in this felection will meet an agreeable companion for a leisure hour. Little elfe is neceffary to fay as a recommendation of a work of this nature; the Editor, therefore throws himself on the candour and protection of the Public, from whom he has more than once experienced the kindest indulgence. |
