he would engage that she should never repent that kind Indulgence. And I am certain, Madam, continued Mr. Haddock, that he is the only Person in the World, who could be of any Ufe to us: He is Master of so many excellent Qualifications. This Character of the Merchant's Friend, and the pleasant Conceit of her new Project, fo warm'd her Imaginations, that she grew more and more delighted with her Refolution thereupon. And which being now abfolutely concluded on between them, they parted; with a mutual and faithful Promise to keep it a profound Secret; and to prepare every thing requifite, on each Side, for the appointed Seafon.

This Evening, Mr. Haddock fupp'd again with Silvius; when he acquainted him with as much of his late Converfation with Angelica, as he could well do with Honour (but not a fingle Word of their Plot) for being refolved to break this heavy News by Degrees, he invented a new Story to amufe him; Part of which gave him inexpreffible Delight. But, like a good Cook, that he might not furfeit his Stomach with its over Richness, he tinctured this luscious-Difh with a fufficient Quantity of wholesome bitter Acids.

The next Morning he return'd again to Angelica to enquire how it operated with her Ma

ther; for he was now become an Agent to all Parties By joining with the Mother, he was a Friend to the Knight; and by fcheming with Angelica, he was a true Agent to Silvius. I mean, as long as Things went on in his Intereft; but now, we fhall fee fuch an unexpected Change in our prefent History, occafion'd by Angelica's new Proceedings, as may perhaps fomewhat alarm our Readers to be inform'd of.

CHAP. VI.

Our Hero receives an Ill-fraught Pacquet by his Friend, and thereupon grows deSperate: He is calm'd by his Adminiftration; and has a Sight of his dear Angelica.

A

S it was but a Folly to keep this Refolution of Angelica's any longer quite a Secret, Mr. Haddock the next Day inform'd Silvius in the beft Manner he could, that in fhort, contrary to his Expectations, Things had now taken a new Turn: and that in Confideration of certain Advantages (which our Readers will by and by be inform'd of) Angelica had, at length, given her Faith and Honour to meet

the Knight, on the Monday following, according to their Request, before the holy Prieft; and there to plight to him her most folemn and facred Vows-By which our Male Readers may learn never to trust too much to the Vows and Promises of a Woman.

This melancholy Account, the judicious Mr. Haddock introduced to the diftracted Ear of the much moved Silvius, with all the fagacious and neceffary Preparation proper for fo unwelcome a Tale. And we apprehend that it will be as needlefs, as it would be deficient, fhould we attempt to describe the various Working of his enraged Blood and Brain. Desperate Revenge, Contempt and Scorn; an inftant Discovery of himself, and an immediate Voyage to England; were all fucceffively and rapidly refolved on. But as faft as any of thofe Refolutions took Place, they were conftantly both watch'd and tempered by the cool Interpofition, and wife Administration of the more moderate Mr. Haddock: who, to calm his fever'd Mind, affured him that if he would but contract his Refentment till the next Day, which was Saturday, and then oblige him with his Company out of Town to spend the whole Day, he would fhew him a Scheme which he had juft conceiv'd, and would by that Time better confider, which he flatter'd himself would give him infinite.

Pleasure

Pleasure in the Execution. And that, the Day after, being Sunday, he would (in a Disguise) carry him to the Ambaffadour's Chapel, where he would not fail to fee this charming Creature, whofe dear Image though falfe, as fhe was, being fo deeply graven in his Heart, had so often fupported his languid Spirits under the utmoft Difficulties and Diftrefs.

Thefe promised Hopes inftantly gave him a very comfortable Relief. But he could not with. his utmost Art and Intreaty gain from his Friend what this Project might be, that was to afford him fo much Satisfaction and Emolument. And therefore, fince this fenfible and prudent Gentleman thought it not fafe, or proper to trust it to his Friend Silvius, who had alfo, fo much Intereft in it, we think it quite as improper, if it were not a Breach of Honour and Trust, to impart the leaft fyllable of this mighty Secret to our Readers, till at leaft a much fafer Opportunity fhall permit us.

Let it then fuffice, for the prefent, that they fpent the next Day in the Country together, as Mr. Haddock had before requested; and when he unfolded to him the full Sum of his late Projection: The Groundwork of which, was very well approved by our impatient Hero; who now thought every Moment a Month, till the expeated Hour fhould arrive, wherein they were VOL. to prove the Iffue of this moft hopefull and pleafing Scheme. And, till which Time, we fhall filently pass over all trivial, fimple Matters, and come with all the Dispatch imaginable to the important Minute, for which we are all now waiting fo very impatiently. Only with our Reader's Leave, we muft, in our Way to Monday's Business, just step in, on Sunday Morning, to pay our Devotion at the Proteftant Chappel, aforefaid. Where our Hero, in a ftrong Difguife, once more beheld the beautifull and charming Idol of his Soul! and with fuch an infpired Tranfport, at this fo long wifh'd for Sight, that it almoft overpower'd his beft Refolution and Faculties.

The golden Sun, in his glorious June-Meridian, when he breathes forth his vivid Spirits on the opening Rofe; and Lady Nature enjoys his sweetest Kiffes on her lovely Bofom (which are far more fweet than thofe imprinted by any filly Fop, or ftupid Rake on the mercenary Breaft of Fanny Murry, or Peggy Woffington) fuch were the blooming Beauties of her lovely Cheeks; and fuch the radiant beaming of her attracting Eyes, when our charming Angelica, but unknowingly, darted her soft Rays of melting Sweetness on our trafported and enamour'd Silvius. All the various Effects of a fudden Extacy, but a little aggravated by Refentment,
