PREFACE.

WRITERS on the prophecies of Daniel, so far as I know, have confounded, either in a greater or lesser degree, 'the time, times, and an half, the thousand two hundred and ninety days, and the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days,' specified in Dan. xii. 7, 11, 12, with 'the time and times and dividing of time' stated in Dan. vii. 25, and with the two thousand and three hundred days' spoken of in Dan. viii. 14; and have interpreted these different numbers as if they all referred, in some way or other, to the same enemies of the church, and foretold the time of their destruction, and the consequent deliverance of the people of God from their usurped dominion and persecuting policy.

The design of this treatise is to expose the fallacy of this interpretation, and to prove that the three prophetical numbers of the twelfth chapter of Daniel are different from these other two numbers, and that they refer to an enemy of the church, and to events in providence, which are quite distinct from those with which the latter are
