Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never-failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs,
And works His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace,
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain;

God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

THRICE HOLY

BY BISHOP REGINALD HEBER

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, Holy, Holy! merciful and mighty!

God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

[ocr errors]

Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore Thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be!

Holy, Holy, Holy! tho the darkness hide Thee,
Tho the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee,

Perfect in power, in love, in purity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea:

Holy, Holy, Holy! merciful and mighty!

God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

ONWARD!

BY SABINE BARING-GOULD

Onward, Christian soldiers,

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus

Going on before;

Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;

Forward into battle,

See, His banners go.

Onward, Christian soldiers,

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus

Going on before!

At the sign of triumph

Satan's host doth flee;

On, then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!

Hell's foundations quiver
At the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise.
Onward, etc.

Like a mighty army

Moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading Where the saints have trod;

We are not divided,

All one body we,

One in hope and doctrine,
One in charity.
Onward, etc.

Crowns and thrones may perish,

Kingdoms rise and wane,

But the Church of Jesus

Constant will remain;

Gates of hell can never

'Gainst that Church prevail;

We have Christ's own promise, And that can not fail.

Onward, etc.

Onward, then, ye people,

Join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices,

In the triumph-song;
Glory, laud, and honor,
Unto Christ the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

Onward, Christian soldiers,

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus
Going on before!

PRAISE TO GOD

BY JOSEPH ADDISON

When all Thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise!

Oh, how shall words with equal warmth

The gratitude declare

That glows within my ravished heart?
But Thou canst read it there.

Thy providence my life sustained,
And all my wants redrest,
When in the silent womb I lay,

And hung upon the breast.

To all my weak complaints and cries
Thy mercy lent an ear,

Ere yet my feeble thoughts had learnt
To form themselves in prayer.

Unnumbered comforts to my soul
Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived
From whom those comforts flowed.

When in the slippery paths of youth
With heedless steps I ran,

Thine arm unseen conveyed me safe,
And led me up to man.

Through hidden dangers, toils, and death, It gently cleared my way,

And through the pleasing snares of vice, More to be feared than they.

When worn with sickness, oft hast thou
With health renewed my face;
And when in sins and sorrows sunk,
Revived my soul with grace.

Thy bounteous hand with worldly bliss
Has made my cup run o'er,

And in a kind and faithful friend

Has doubled all my store.
