NOTIFICATION TO THE DIOCESES OF THE ALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS IN THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PROPOSED IN THE CENERAL CONVENTION OF 1883, AND TO BE ACTED UPON AT THE GENERAL CONVENTION OF 1886. NOTE. THE Constitution of the Church declares that "no alteration or addition shall be made in the Book of Common Prayer, or other Offices of the Church, or the Articles of Religion, unless the same shall be proposed in one General Convention, and by a resolve thereof made known to the Convention of every Diocese, and adopted at the subsequent General Convention." In accordance with this provision, the "alterations and additions" contained in the following pages, proposed at the General Convention of 1883, and to be acted upon at the General Convention of 1886, have been made known to the Conventions of the several Dioceses, and also, as required by Title III, Canon 1, Section iii of the Digest, to the Ecclesiastical Authority thereof. As the subject is of general interest to the Church, it has been thought best to print some additional copies of this Notification, of which this is one. Chas. L. Hutchins. Secretary of the House of Deputies. MEDFORD, MASS., April 1, A. D. 1885. RESOLUTION I. Resolved: That the following changes be made in connection with THE TITLE-PAGE of the Book of Common Prayer, and that the proposed alterations be made known to the several Dioceses, in order that they may be severally adopted in the next General Convention in accordance with the provisions of Article VIII of the Constitution. (a) Omit from the title-page the words "together with the Psalter, or Psalms of David," putting a full stop after the word AMERICA, so that the title shall read as follows: THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS; AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. (b) On the first page of the leaf preceding the titlepage print the general title, The Book of Common Prayer. |
