OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"The British Tariff' for 1856-57, by E. Beedell, has just been published, and contains complete tables of the duties payable at the CustomHouse, with those levied in the British Colonies, and a variety of other information connected with warehousing and waterside practice, useful to the merchant, ship-owner, and general trader."-Times, City Article.

"Mr. Beedell has been intent on keeping up the established high character of his book by making every alteration required from legal changes, by incorporating new and most useful information, and by a careful revision of the whole of the contents."-Morning Chronicle.

"Mr. Edwin Beedell, of the Custom-House, has rendered an essential service to the mercantile community and the public in general, by the New Edition of his 'BRITISH TARIFF.' The possession of such a work as this, useful to all classes as it must be, would not be less useful to members of the legislature. It would be the saving to them of much time and trouble, for herein they would find, in a convenient form, a body of Customs' law and practice for immediate reference, which otherwise could be obtained only by the consultation of Parliamentary Records, Acts of Parliament, &c."-Daily News.

"The British Tariff is a carefully-compiled and comprehensive manual of Custom-House practice at home and in the Colonies, and of the numerous operations and transactions incidental to the shipment, landing, warehousing, and bonding of merchandize,-a work which is certain to prove highly acceptable to the mercantile classes, and, in fact, to all persons who may have occasion for advice in such matters. It sets forth succinctly, yet clearly, the state of the law relative to the several matters to which it refers, and the statement of the law is accompanied with the proper instructions for facilitating the despatch of business."-Morning Advertiser.

"The new edition of this very useful work will be received by the mercantile community with that increased favour to which its comprehensive body of information on all points connected with the Customs justly entitles it. The completeness of the work is guaranteed by Mr. Beedell's opportunities of access to the most accredited sources of information." Globe. "This is a new edition, just issued, of Mr. Beedell's well known and generally-consulted work on the laws and duties of Customs, to be without which is to feel the want of a ready and authentic manual of constant reference in business. Some new features have been added to this edition, which now embraces the tariffs of all the British Colonies, complete lists of every officer and clerk in the service of the Customs, and the amount of revenue received at each port in the United Kingdom in the last fiscal year. The information given in this volume is so extensive and varied, that it would be impossible, in a brief notice, to enumerate a tithe of its contents; but it embraces official regulations of all kinds as to baggage, ships' stores, imports and exports, duties, waterside practice, coastwise regulations, rent charges, forms of entries, &c. The rules on admission to the Customs' service and other data are also added and there are some very useful tables and rules for computation, mensuration, and the reduction of foreign weights and measures. Above all, there is an excellent index to facilitate reference to the vast body of useful information compressed into the volume. The present edition will maintain Mr. Beedell's reputation as an industrious compiler, and secure for his work a large circulation, in spite of numerous other works taking up separate branches of the subjects he treats upon."-Shipping Gazette.
