Concerning the use of the words Soul, or Spirit, in holy Scripture; and the state of the Dead there defcribed.

IN

רוח and נשמה נפש N the firft place the words

in the Old Testament, which are in our verfion generally translated foul, or spirit; as well as those of the fame import in the New, veμ and vx7; most commonly denote,

I. PERSONS.

As when they are numbered. Gen. xlvi.15. All the fouls of his fons and daughters were thirty and three. Add 22,27. Exod.i. 5. xii.4.-xvi.16. according to the number of your perfons. Num. xxxi. 28. — levy a tribute—one foul of five hundred, both of the perfons, and of the beeves, &c. -35-thirty and two thousand perfons in all. -40.-the perfons were fixteen thousand.-46. fixteen thousand perfons. 1 Chron.v.21. they took away of men an hundred thousand. Jer.lii. 29. carried away captive-eight hundred and thirty two perfons. 30.- Nebuzaradan carried away captive of the Jews feven hundred and forty five perfons. Acts ii. 41.—the fame day were added unto them about three thousand fouls. Add vii. 14, xxvii. 3 37. I Pet. iii. 20.

3. Thirdly, foul, or spirit often fignifies the man himself as my foul, i. e. I. Gen. xii. 13. Say, I pray thee, thou art my fifter-and my foul fhall live because of thee. xix. 20.-let me efcape thither, and my foul fhall live. xxvii. 4. that my foul may bless thee before I die. Job vii. 15.--so that my foul chooseth strangling. x. 1, my foul is weary of my life. Add Pfal. xxxv. 9. lvii. 4. Matt. xxvi. 38.

My foul, i,e. me, Num. xxiii. 10.- let me die the death of the righteous. Pfalm xxxv. 3.— say unto my foul, I am thy falvation. xli. 4. heal my foul, for I have finned against thee.

Thy foul, i.e. thyself. Efth, iv. 13. Prov. iii. 22. fo fhall they be life unto thy foul. Ezek. iii. 19.thou haft delivered thy foul. Add ✯. 21.

Thy spirit, i. e. thee. 2 Tim. vi. 22. The Lord Jefus be with thy fpirit.

His foul, i. e, himself, Prov. xi. 17. The merciful man doth good to his own foul. Add xx. 2.

Her foul, i. e. herself. Ifai. v. 14. (applied by a profopopoeia to the grave,) therefore hell hath enlarged herself.
